Written while Adeyemi was in her early twenties, the best-selling book, Children of Blood and Bone, introduced a fierce, magical universe deeply rooted in West African folklore and Yoruba traditions. The novel's deep cultural resonance sparked a global movement, paving the way for the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy to join the ranks of pop culture giants like Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games.

Now, its cinematic adaptation bypasses familiar European medieval tropes in favor of authentic African landscapes and immersive design, grounding ancestral magic in raw, physical realism. Driven by a powerhouse ensemble cast and profound themes of heritage and resilience, the film is poised to usher in a new era in fantasy storytelling.

The long-awaited cinematic adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone is officially set to hit global theaters on January 15, 2027. Paramount Pictures acquired the distribution rights following a competitive bidding war, committing to an exclusive theatrical window to ensure the epic scale of Orïsha receives a premium big-screen release across formats such as IMAX and Dolby Cinema. A January premiere positions the project as a major tentpole anchor for early 2027, giving the post-production team ample time to craft its complex magical visual effects, build authentic soundscapes, and finalize the score. 

The path to the big screen has been a complex, years-long journey. The project initially went through extended development at Fox 2000 and Lucasfilm before finding its permanent home at Paramount. Principal photography took place on location across the African continent, starting with Lagos in Nigeria, to capture real, immersive landscapes.

With production wrapped, Paramount ignited excitement by showcasing behind-the-scenes footage at CinemaCon and rolling out official teasers, locking in the January 2027 target for audiences worldwide.

Children of Blood and Bone boasts an extraordinary, star-studded ensemble that seamlessly blends Hollywood heavyweights with acclaimed rising talent. Leading the narrative as the fierce Zélie Adebola is South African powerhouse Thuso Mbedu, who captivated international audiences in Amazon’s The Underground Railroad and previously collaborated with director Gina Prince-Bythewood in The Woman King. She is joined by Damson Idris, widely celebrated for his iconic lead role in FX's crime drama Snowfall, as Crown Prince Inan, alongside Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give, The Hunger Games) playing Princess Amari, and Tosin Cole (Doctor Who, Till) as Zélie's protective brother, Tzain.

Anchoring the film's complex royalty and mentors are several of cinema's most decorated performers. Oscar-nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Doctor Strange) steps into the shoes of the ruthless King Saran, while EGOT winner Viola Davis (Fences, How to Get Away with Murder) portrays the wise Mama Agba. The star power continues with Academy Award-winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) as Queen Nehanda, Idris Elba (Luther, Thor) as the mysterious reaper Lekan, and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Wicked) taking on the role of Admiral Kaea.

Completing this formidable roster are Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), Nollywood icon Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Afrobeats superstar Ayra Starr in her feature film acting debut.

Set in the fantastical African kingdom of Orïsha, Children of Blood and Bone centers on Zélie Adebola, a young woman who vividly remembers when magic flowed through her land. That era ended abruptly eleven years ago during "The Raid," a dark night when the ruthless King Saran severed the realm’s connection to the gods and slaughtered the magic-wielding maji, including Zélie’s mother, leaving the surviving practitioners oppressed and powerless. Zélie’s life changes when she crosses paths with Princess Amari, King Saran’s rogue daughter who has fled the palace with a stolen artifact capable of awakening dormant magic. 

Joined by Zélie’s brother Tzain, the duo embarks on a high-stakes quest across Orïsha to retrieve two additional sacred relics, a bone dagger and a sunstone, and complete an ancient ritual before the summer solstice to permanently restore magic to their people. Their journey is fraught with peril as Crown Prince Inan relentlessly hunts them down under his father’s orders to destroy magic forever. Along the way, Zélie must learn to harness her own abilities as a Reaper, a wielder of spirit and death magic, while navigating complex alliances, deep-seated prejudices, and a dangerous game of rebellion.

Paramount Pictures has officially released the first public teaser trailer for Children of Blood and Bone. Set to Beyoncé’s anthem 'Energy,' the dramatic trailer offers a sweeping first look at the rich world-building of Orïsha. The footage opens on Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, showcasing her memories of a vibrant, magic-filled realm before Chiwetel Ejiofor’s ruthless King Saran violently suppressed the Maji. It builds into high-stakes action, revealing Zélie’s desperate quest alongside her brother Tzain and the rogue royal Princess Amari.

Spectators get glimpses of Prince Inan torn between duty and morality. 

Alongside him, brief, powerful reveals of Mama Agba and Queen Nehanda are also seen. Rather than heavy CGI, the footage emphasizes practical visual grandeur, featuring hand-carved West African architecture, sprawling South African landscapes, vibrant Yoruba-inspired costumes, and intense martial combat punctuated by traditional African drumming. The trailer sets a grounded, epic tone, teasing high magic anchored in raw realism.

Acclaimed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, The Old Guard) directs the feature adaptation from a screenplay she co-wrote alongside novel author Tomi Adeyemi. After turning down the project twice over seven years, Prince-Bythewood jumped at the opportunity when she felt fully prepared for its immense scope. 

"I think I needed to know how to make this film because this film is huge... I needed to have that guttural connection," she shared with Essence Magazine recently, regarding her decision to sign on.  

Paramount Pictures backed the production with a massive budget to deliver a sprawling, grounded epic. Filmed on location across South Africa and Nigeria, the project prioritized immersive real-world environments over digital sets. Prince-Bythewood also remarked on the star-studded ensemble.

"Someone tweeted that we’re stacked like the '96 Bulls. And it’s true. This is the best of the best…” she said, “They all recognize the beauty of the script, but also the rarity of a film like this. This film is one of one." 

Adeyemi also praised the collaboration, noting how thrilling it is to watch Orïsha’s high-stakes ancestral magic transition from the page onto a global cinematic stage. The most thrilling aspect is witnessing West African mythology step into the blockbuster spotlight on a massive scale. Adding to that excitement, director Gina Prince-Bythewood is reuniting with her key The Woman King collaborators, lead actor Thuso Mbedu, co-star Viola Davis, and actor Lashana Lynch, ensuring this powerhouse creative team brings the same fierce, unmatched energy to the magical realm of Orïsha.
