Season 13 of Chicago P.D. has been much about Officer Eva Imani’s arduous attempt to find her long-lost sister, who was kidnapped at the age of six. Although the sisters were finally reunited, the ending took a devastating turn for Imani, whose sister not only failed to recognize her but could also potentially be a criminal. Her lifelong mission to find her sister has instead landed her in one of the most heartbreaking situations imaginable, where she must now make a difficult decision.

After the ending to Season 13 of the police procedural drama, writer Gwen Sigan spoke about creating the complicated conclusion for Imani and her sister.

Imani’s long search finally led her to Shari, who sees her kidnapper, Kirby, as her husband and only family. Although Shari appeared to recall fragments of her past, she ultimately turned against Imani and even attempted to attack her, while Kirby revealed that she had also been involved in the crime under investigation. However, Voight and the team arrived just in time to save Imani while Shari had harmed herself. Now, although Shari has survived, which is a relief to her sister, Imani is left with the painful decision of whether her little sister could end up behind bars.

It seems this is the ending writer Gwen Sigan had in mind. While speaking to Deadline, the writer explained how Imani’s character has been shaped by the trauma of getting separated from her sister. And while a reunion was decided for the character, they wanted to involve betrayal, heartbreak, Shari forgetting her own sister, and much more that is seen in the series.

“So we knew we wanted to take it in the most complicated way we could. So that became what our conversations in the room were about: what would be the most heartbreaking thing?” Sigan explained the thought process behind the season 13 ending.

Now, while season 13 may have ended on a brutal note for Imani, there is little hope for her and her sister, as the writer hinted during the interview.

Now that one of the biggest questions surrounding Imani’s mission has finally been answered, will the show continue to focus on the sisters’ struggles or shift its attention to a different storyline? When asked about it, writer Gwen Sigan explained that the team has not yet decided on the direction of Imani and Shari’s future. So, both a potential trial and the possibility of moving this storyline into the background remain open for the upcoming season.

“Yeah, it’s all on the table right now. I think there are so many possibilities,” she told Deadline.
