Andrew Garfield has never shied away from speaking about the emotions that accompany loss. Since the death of his mother, Lynn, from pancreatic cancer in 2019, the actor has spoken candidly about how grief changed his understanding of love, mortality, and the passage of time. His openness became particularly resonant after an emotional conversation about his mother went viral, in which he described grief as a form of unexpressed love.

Years later, Garfield continues to return to that experience, not as something he believes can simply be overcome, but as something that remains intertwined with the love he still carries for his mother.

During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes brought up Garfield’s well-known comments about grief from 2019 and praised him for speaking openly about an experience many people struggle to discuss. Garfield reflected on his mother’s death and acknowledged that, even though he had told her he loved her, losing her left behind something that could never be completely resolved.

“There still is this kind of chasm of grief that's never gonna be fully, you know. The love was the remarkable thing in that experience for me. The love is truly never-ending. It's infinite. It's infinite,” Garfield said.

Garfield went on to explain that the feeling does not disappear simply because the person is gone, and that it would not stop even when he dies. He also continued to explain how he fails to understand that grief is a taboo thing in the culture, and seeing so many people resonate with what he said was "very beautiful" for him to see.

The actor has previously spoken about his mother’s death with the same openness. During a 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Garfield became emotional while discussing his mother and described grief as “all the unexpressed love.”

While grief remains a defining part of Garfield’s reflections on love, the actor also opened up about another deeply personal question—his hopes of building a family of his own.

The SmartLess conversation also took an unexpectedly personal turn when the hosts asked Garfield about having children. The actor, who is 42, responded candidly, saying,

“I'm 42 and I'm childless, and I'm not entirely proud of that. Like, I would love to have kids. I would love to start a family.”

The admission came while Garfield was discussing The Magic Faraway Tree, a family film he made alongside a cast and story centered on children, family, and community. He also spoke warmly about having nephews and godchildren, and about seeing young children respond enthusiastically to the film.

For Garfield, both revelations point toward the same larger theme: an appreciation for connection, love, and the people who give life meaning. His grief for his mother remains painful, but he continues to speak about it as evidence of how deeply he loved her—and as a reminder not to take the opportunity to express that love for granted.
