CBS has just confirmed a second season for Marshals, which is a spinoff from the Yellowstone universe. This comes just 12 days after the premiere of the show, which had 20.6 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+ within seven days. As per the ratings data from Nielsen, the premiere of Marshals became the most-watched new broadcast series debut on CBS without an NFL lead-in.
With such massive success, a Season 2 confirmation came swiftly for the show. The last time a show had such impressive ratings without an NFL lead-in was Young Sheldon in 2017, as CBS noted per Nielsen Panel + Big Data and live+7 ratings. The premiere episode also became the most-streamed CBS show on Paramount+.
Much of the success can be credited to the hype surrounding the Yellowstone series and the show. Marshals follows Kayce Dutton as he joins the United States Marshals in Montana to fight crime. It is also shown to be a new beginning for him and his family, but what happened before Dutton made such a big decision?
The premiere of Marshals had one of the most shocking reveals, which likely explains why many tuned in to watch the first episode without delay.
Shocking detail of Marshals' premiere
Marshals picks up a year after the events of Yellowstone. However, the shocking details of what happened during that time were revealed in the show’s premiere on March 1. It turns out that Kayce Dutton’s wife, and one of the emotional anchors of the series, Monica, had died from cancer caused by toxins dumped on the Broken Rock Reservation.
So, Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Monica in Yellowstone, did not return for the show. The first episode focuses on Kayce following Monica’s death. One scene shows him visiting his wife’s grave on a hilltop, where he gives an emotional monologue while hinting at a new direction in his life.

“The best part of me died with you. You always told me to fight for the life I want. But I had the life I wanted. It was with you. I’m changing paths,” he said.
Monica played a crucial role not only in Kayce’s journey but also in Yellowstone. So, her absence in Marshals was a major turning point. And it also sets a more intense path ahead for Kayce, with the story now moving forward with Season 2.
