The creative team behind Disney's live-action Moana has come forward with glowing praise for its lead actress, Catherine Laga'aia, ahead of the film's release. The worldwide search for the right person to carry one of Disney's most beloved characters was anything but straightforward, and the result has clearly left those closest to the project emotional. From the director to the original voice actress, the verdict appears unanimous: something special has been found.

While the animated Moana captured hearts a decade ago, the real question now is whether a brand-new face can carry that same ocean-sized legacy forward.

Songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda described the search for Moana as a worldwide one, and Catherine Laga'aia emerged from it as the only name that made sense. It was her singing and her fearless, curious energy that caught the creative team's attention and refused to let go. The combination proved impossible to overlook, making her selection feel less like a casting decision and more like a discovery.

"It is such a joy to see Catherine take on the life of this character," original voice actress Auli'i Cravalho said of Laga'aia in the Walt Disney Studios video.

Director Thomas Kail declared, "it could only be her."

Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, reprising his role from both the 2016 animated film and its 2024 sequel. Alongside him, John Tui steps in as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams plays Sina, and Rena Owen takes on Gramma Tala. The film is directed by Thomas Kail, best known for his work on Hamilton, bringing a theatre-rooted sensibility to a story deeply anchored in music and movement.

As the cast comes together with Johnson anchoring the adventure, the real voyage begins with a story audiences already know and love.

The live-action reimagining follows Moana as she answers the ocean's call and voyages beyond the reef of Motunui alongside Maui to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save her people. Original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina return, with Mancina also composing the film's score. The story stays true to the animated original's spirit while giving an entirely new cast the chance to bring it to life.

The 2024 animated sequel, Moana 2, earned praise for its visuals but drew criticism for leaning too heavily on the original's formula, proving just how high the bar sits for anything carrying the Moana name. That context makes Catherine Laga'aia's task both exciting and considerable, as audiences arrive with clear expectations. If the creative team's enthusiasm is any indication, the newcomer may be more than ready to meet them.
