Cate Blanchett has made a career out of refusing to let one version of herself last too long, moving from awards-season dramas to comic oddities and full-blooded genre fare. After Tár, The New Boy, Rumours and Black Bag, her recent choices have only made her filmography more unpredictable, with each role seeming to push her further from the expected Blanchett archetype.

That makes her latest turn in Alpha Gang, where she fronts an alien biker crew, feel less like a left turn than another perfectly timed reinvention. 

The first look at Alpha Gang finds Blanchett looking almost unrecognizable as Alpha One, complete with an eyepatch and the hard-edged attitude of a 1950s biker. Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, the filmmakers behind Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and Sasquatch Sunset, the film surrounds Blanchett with an unusually eclectic ensemble that includes Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, Lily-Rose Depp, Léa Seydoux, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Doona Bae and Chris Pine. 

What makes the casting and its first look especially delicious is how naturally it fits Blanchett’s recent appetite for tonal whiplash. She went from the ferocious intellectual control of Lydia Tár to the broad comic absurdity of Rumours, then played espionage games with Michael Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. Even Borderlands, despite its critical reception, placed her in full-scale genre territory. Alpha Gang pushes that instinct further, allowing her to weaponize the kind of icy screen presence that once made characters such as Hela so memorable, but this time through a knowingly strange biker-gang aesthetic.

And then comes the deliciously bizarre premise behind all that leather.

Alpha Gang begins with an extraterrestrial invasion disguised as something deeply terrestrial: a leather-clad biker gang seemingly ripped from a 1950s exploitation movie. The aliens arrive with conquest on their minds, presenting themselves as dangerous outsiders while attempting to carry out their mission on Earth. The Zellners reportedly drew from the visual language of 1950s biker culture, while also pulling inspiration from pop-culture touchstones such as Happy Days and Grease.

The joke, however, is not simply that aliens are pretending to be bikers. Their carefully controlled mission begins to unravel when they encounter humanity’s most inconvenient feature: emotion. The official synopsis describes the invaders as catching the supposedly contagious disease of human feeling, turning a straightforward conquest story into something closer to an absurdist character comedy. Blanchett has described the film as “alien Chekhovian,” an unusually precise phrase for a movie where cosmic invaders in biker gear are apparently forced to confront the messy business of becoming human. 

 Alpha Gang looks like another wonderfully peculiar chapter in Cate Blanchett’s already shape-shifting filmography, pairing her dramatic precision with the kind of genre eccentricity that lets her disappear completely into a character. If the first look is any indication, Alpha One could become one of her most entertainingly unexpected turns yet.
