“And then the world exploded.” Stephen King needed only a few words to capture the terror waiting inside Carrie White. More than five decades after his 1974 debut novel introduced the bullied teenager with telekinetic abilities, Carrie is returning through a format that can spend far more time inside her fractured world.

Mike Flanagan has transformed King’s tragedy into an eight-episode Prime Video series filled with teenage cruelty, supernatural power and modern social-media pressure.

Here is everything to know about its cast, story and release date.

Summer H. Howell: Carrie White. Howell leads the series as the isolated teenager whose telekinetic abilities emerge amid relentless bullying. Prime Video says more than 1,000 actors read for the role before Howell was selected.

Samantha Sloyan: Margaret White. Sloyan plays Carrie’s fiercely protective and deeply religious mother, whose controlling presence has kept her daughter sheltered from the world around her.

Siena Agudong: Sue Snell. Agudong portrays Sue, Carrie’s classmate and one of the central students caught in the moral consequences of the cruelty directed toward Carrie.

Alison Thornton: Chris Hargensen. Thornton takes on Chris, whose hostility toward Carrie places her directly within the escalating school conflict.

Joel Oulette: Tommy Ross. Oulette plays Tommy, Sue’s boyfriend and another crucial figure in the chain of events leading toward Carrie’s defining night.

Those familiar names give King’s high-school nightmare its human faces, but Flanagan is also changing the circumstances surrounding them.

All eight episodes of Carrie arrive on Prime Video on October 7, 2026, making this the first television-series adaptation of King’s novel. Mike Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, while King is also an executive producer. Flanagan directs Episodes 1, 2, 7 and 8, with Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata directing the middle chapters.

The new version begins with Carrie living an intensely sheltered existence under Margaret’s control. Her father’s sudden death pushes her into public high school, where she becomes trapped inside a viral bullying scandal and the casual cruelty of the social-media age. At the same time, mysterious telekinetic abilities begin awakening alongside adolescence. 

King’s novel has already reached screens several times. Brian De Palma directed the celebrated 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek, while Kimberly Peirce helmed the 2013 Carrie adaptation with Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. His version has room to explore characters and tensions that a feature film must compress, giving one of horror literature’s most famous tragedies eight episodes to slowly tighten the screws.
