After she spent almost ten years away from Hollywood, reprising one of her most famous characters not only imparts emotive significance to it but also raises expectations.

The last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, arrived in theaters almost two decades ago, which prompted the audience at Fallon's show to upgrade Diaz's character to Queen Fiona. This marks the first time Diaz has confirmed her role on camera since the 2024 announcement of the fifth instalment of the series. Furthermore, the movie is set to reunite Diaz with Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy after a 16-year hiatus in the franchise.

No matter how exciting the reunion might be, the film has rescheduled its release date after facing multiple timing changes and delays, pushing it back to a whole year later.

Previously, Shrek 5 was slated for a July 1, 2026, release, but it has been moved to June 30, 2027. The billion-dollar franchise will feature the original voice cast members with new actors joining the esteemed cult classic series. Mike Myers stars as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona; Zendaya is Felicia, Shrek and Fiona's daughter; Skylar Gisondo voices Farkle, and Marcello Hernández voices Fergus, Shrek and Fiona's sons.

Meanwhile, Conrad Vernon stars as the Gingerbread Man, and Eddie Murphy returns as Donkey. The plot details are still mostly secret, but the story will continue Shrek and Fiona's life in Far Far Away and may focus on their children and family life. With a post-retirement Diaz's unbridled excitement, viewers can expect exhilarating new adventures on brand to the franchise's blend of fairy-tale parody, comedy, and emotional storytelling.
