Shōgun Season 2 has officially began filming in January 2026 across Vancouver, British Columbia, with several jaw-dropping sets and outdoor locations evoking Edo-period Japan with meticulous detail. The series had filmed a large portion of its first season in Port Moody, and Season 2 expands the production site to Minaty Bay along the Sea to Sky Highway and Whistler.

Hiroyuki Sanada returns to his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the season, while Cosmo Jarvis takes on John Blackthorne, aka The Anjin, once again. Meanwhile, both stars also contribute to the award-winning series as co-executive producers.

The new cast members who have joined the production for season 2 include Ren Meguro as Kazutada, Asami Mizukawa (Aya), Masataka Kubota (Hyūga), Sho Kaneta (Hidenobu), Takaaki Enoki (Lord Ito), and Jun Kunimura (Gōda).

Meanwhile, Fumi Nikaidô (Ochiba), Yoriko Dôguchi (Kiri), Shinnosuke Abe (Buntaro), Tommy Bastow (Alvito), Yuka Kouri (Kiku), Hiroto Kanai (Omi), Yuko Miyamoto (Gin), Eita Okuno (Saeki), return from the original cast to support their roles, which maintain the continuity of the world established in Shōgun Season 1, to be expanded by the sophomore season.

The second season propels new dramatic possibilities to new heights through its time jump and additional characters.

What happens in Shōgun Season 2?

The second season kicks off ten years after the events of the first season. It continues the complex interwoven narrative of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, who share a common destiny during Japan's changing political landscape.

"Like the first season, I think part two is a really sweeping, beautiful, and you’re never going to see a coming, entirely unexpected love story," the Primetime Emmy Award-winning show's co-creator Justin Marks told Variety.

The new storyline will run past the original James Clavell's Shōgun novel's plot, adapting ideas directly from the expansive Japanese history after 1600. Hiroyuki Sanada, in several interviews, has promised that no viewer can predict what is to come in the second season of the show.

"In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a Shōgun yet. So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope," Sanada expressed his wishes for Season 2 in an interview with Deadline as he swept the Critics' Choice Awards 2025.

Shōgun Season 2 currently lacks an official release date, but production has begun. The show will likely premiere between mid and late 2027 on Hulu in the US and Disney+ for international audiences.
