The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has unveiled the lineup for its Vision section, spotlighting 23 Korean and Asian independent films from emerging talents and acclaimed filmmakers across the region. The selection is divided into 12 Vision-Korea titles and 11 Vision-Asia entries, featuring returning BIFF award winners, internationally recognized directors, and several feature debuts. Notable films include Some Detective, Cosmic Trace, 1982, Selvi, and Birds in the Dark. 

The Vision program continues BIFF's commitment to showcasing innovative storytelling and rising cinematic voices ahead of the festival's October 6-15 run in Busan, South Korea.

The Vision-Korea lineup includes 12 films from directors with strong ties to BIFF and other major international festivals. Among the most notable selections is Some Detective from Kim Miyoung, whose A Lonely Island in the Distant Sea won the DGK Megabox Award at BIFF in 2023. Other standout titles include Park Songyeol's Beyond Love's Horizon, Sohn Hyun-lok's The Birds, and Park Hong-min's Space. The section also features several feature debuts, including Kim Hyomi's animated film Earbug and Kim Si-jin's The Flower.

Alongside returning filmmakers, the lineup highlights a new generation of Korean storytellers. Films such as Not For You, Full Moon, Nothing Has Happened Yet, and Things I Left at the Theater explore themes ranging from family relationships and personal identity to social isolation and self-discovery, reflecting the diverse voices shaping contemporary Korean independent cinema.

A wide range of filmmakers from Asia will present their latest works in the Vision-Asia program.

The Vision-Asia lineup features filmmakers from 10 countries and regions, underlining BIFF's role as one of Asia's most important platforms for independent cinema. Vietnam is represented by Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp's 1982, a film following a filmmaker searching for a missing parent. Japan contributes multiple entries, including Kumamoto Ryohei's feature debut After the Song and Yaza Takenoshin's Hinotama: Ball of Fire. Takenoshin first gained attention as a teenager through documentary filmmaking and now arrives at BIFF with his debut narrative feature.

Hong Kong filmmaker Isabella Lam Lok-hin will premiere Dead End, while the Philippines' Arvin Belarmino brings Ria, a story centered on a folk-punk musician struggling to preserve both his music and his home. Mongolian director Sakhya Byamba returns to Busan with Zogsool. The filmmaker previously won BIFF's New Currents Award in 2013 for Remote Control, making his return one of the most closely watched entries in the section.

Iranian filmmaker Mani Moghaddam's Slumber uses magical realism to explore difficult social realities, while Thailand's Bua marks the directorial debut of actor Inthira Charoenpura alongside co-director Phensiri Klangsurin.

The Vision-Korea section features a mix of celebrated festival veterans and emerging filmmakers.

The 2026 lineup reflects that mission by balancing established festival favorites with newcomers making their feature debuts. From animated projects and intimate family dramas to socially conscious narratives and experimental storytelling, the selections represent a broad spectrum of contemporary Asian filmmaking.

While BIFF 2026 is spotlighting the future of Asian independent cinema, global film festivals are also embracing new forms of storytelling. Earlier this year, Tribeca made headlines by setting the world premiere of Dreams of Violets, widely described as the first fully AI-generated feature film accepted into a major festival's official lineup.

With a mix of returning award-winning directors and promising new voices, the Vision section once again stands as one of BIFF's most anticipated programs. The 31st Busan International Film Festival will run from October 6-15, 2026, across Busan, South Korea. Meanwhile, the Asian Contents & Film Market will take place from October 10-13, bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals, and global buyers from around the world.
