Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are teaming up once again, but this time their longtime friendship is being transformed into the premise of a new comedy series. The pair, who have previously shared the screen in projects including True Detective, EDtv, and Surfer, Dude, are returning as the leads and executive producers of Apple TV’s Brothers.

The series takes inspiration from the unusual real-life connection between the two actors and turns it into a fictional story about friendship, family, and a potentially life-changing secret. Here is everything you need to know about this.

The series is led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who play fictionalized versions of themselves. Their characters are joined by an ensemble cast that includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Holland Taylor. The show is produced for Apple TV and marks another collaboration between the two longtime friends.

What is Brothers about?

Brothers begins after Harrelson's daughter’s wedding falls apart, prompting him to pack up his family and head to Austin for an extended stay at McConaughey's ranch. What starts as an attempt at a healing getaway quickly becomes much more complicated when McConaughey's mother accidentally reveals a decades-old secret: Harrelson and McConaughey might actually be brothers.

Harrelson becomes determined to uncover the truth, turning the ranch upside down as he investigates their possible family connection. At the same time, McConaughey faces an identity crisis of his own as he considers a potential run for governor of Texas. The story consequently moves between questions of family, friendship, fame, and the difference between reality and the stories people tell about themselves.

The premise also draws from a real-life story McConaughey and Harrelson have discussed publicly, although the series itself is a fictionalized comedy.

When will Brothers be released?

Brothers will premiere globally on Apple TV on September 23, 2026. The first two episodes will be released on premiere day, followed by one new episode every Wednesday through November 4, when the season finale is scheduled to arrive.
