In HBO’s Lanterns, Thaal Sinestro emerges as one of the DC Universe’s most formidable villains, reimagined as Hal Jordan’s fallen mentor. Ulrich Thomsen brings the character a comic-accurate pink complexion, sharp brows, and mustache, while grounding him in the uneasy history he shares with Hal.

The series has only begun exploring that relationship, yet Thomsen already sounds eager to continue the journey. 

Ulrich Thomsen did not sound hesitant about returning to the character, and his response could matter far beyond the current season, especially with John Stewart heading toward another major DCU appearance.

“It’s a great world. It’s a great take on the Lanterns, I think. Bring it on. I’m ready,” he told TheWrap.  His enthusiasm reflects the opportunity Lanterns gives Sinestro to feel like a person shaped by history, ambition and resentment rather than simply another costumed threat. Thomsen also revealed how demanding the transformation can be.  

Makeup sessions lasted three or four hours, with the production adjusting the shade after an early camera test found the character looked a little too pink. Despite the lengthy process, the actor said he would gladly do it again because Sinestro has so much more to explore. His comments to The Wrap point toward stories that could examine the villain’s past, ideology and complicated bond with Hal in greater depth.

 And while Sinestro may have an even larger role in the DCU, Ryan Reynolds has unexpectedly opened another door

Ryan Reynolds has unexpectedly opened another door. The actor, who played Hal Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern, recently told Entertainment Tonight.

“I would totally do a cameo in that. I love it,” Reynolds also reflected positively on the experience, saying that he learned so much making that movie and that he owes his career to the project. 

  There is no confirmation that Reynolds will actually appear in Lanterns, and Kyle Chandler remains the series’ Hal Jordan while Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart. The idea has still gained attention because HBO Max even responded to Reynolds with a playful social-media video referencing his cameo comment.  

Meanwhile, Lanterns is gaining momentum, with Episode 3 reaching 10 million global viewers in its first three days, according to Warner Bros. Discovery figures. Pierre will also continue as John Stewart in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, due in theaters on July 9, 2027.
