Sony Pictures has officially slated Skeletons for an exclusive theatrical release on June 4, 2027, marking the studio’s latest big horror bet. After reportedly winning a $25 million bidding war for the project, Sony moved quickly into production, with principal photography beginning in Australia in June 2026. Adapted from Philip Fracassi’s acclaimed short story Fail-Safe, the film follows a young boy whose seemingly ordinary family hides an unimaginable secret.

However, behind the nightmare is an equally impressive creative team. Strange Darling filmmaker J.T. Mollner directs from a screenplay by Brian Duffield, while J.J. Abrams produces through Bad Robot Productions, bringing together some of horror’s most exciting storytellers. The ensemble is just as formidable, with John Goodman, Kyle Gallner, Willa Fitzgerald, Keith Carradine, Ione Skye, and Daithí Ó hAragáin joining Larson in what promises to be one of Sony’s most intriguing horror lineups in recent years.

For Sony, however, Skeletons is only one piece of a much bigger cinematic puzzle, and 2027 is already shaping up to be one of the studio’s most ambitious years in recent memory.

Sony is building a 2027 slate packed with giants across every genre

While Skeletons promises psychological terror, it arrives as part of an unusually stacked theatrical lineup from Sony Pictures. The studio will kick off the year with the long-awaited live-action The Legend of Zelda, before handing the spotlight to Brie Larson’s creature horror in early June. Just two weeks later, audiences will return to Miles Morales’ universe with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the highly anticipated conclusion to the animated trilogy that has become one of modern cinema’s biggest superhero success stories. The momentum does not stop there.

Sony’s 2027 calendar also includes Justin Lin’s Helldivers, animated sequel Wish Dragon 2, family comedy Buds, along with The Nightingale and Live Like That, giving the studio one of its most diverse release slates in years. Whether it’s monsters lurking behind closed doors, legendary kingdoms coming to life, or superheroes swinging back onto the big screen, Sony appears determined to make 2027 a year where every genre gets its moment to shine.

However, with its release date now locked in, Skeletons is already shaping up to be one of 2027’s most intriguing horror films, leaving audiences to wonder what terrifying secret awaits behind its locked doors.
