Brad Pitt is officially returning to star in Paramount’s long-delayed World War Z sequel, finally giving the zombie franchise a way forward after years of false starts. The original 2013 film became a global hit despite its famously troubled production, including extensive reshoots and a completely reworked third act. Now, more than a decade later, Pitt is back as Gerry Lane, but this time with a very different filmmaker behind the camera.

For anyone who remembers the original World War Z, the sequel has almost become a Hollywood ghost story. The movie survived production chaos, a massive reshoot operation and years of development rumors, only for proposed follow-ups to repeatedly disappear.

The new sequel of World War Z is being directed by Edward Berger, the filmmaker behind All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, who recently worked with Brad Pitt on A24’s upcoming The Riders, as per Deadline. Dennis Kelly has written the screenplay, while Pitt will produce alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner through Plan B, with Berger also serving as an executive producer. Plot details remain firmly under wraps. 

As Deadline reports, this marks a significant revival for a sequel that has been through several versions over the years. David Fincher was once attached to direct and reportedly envisioned a darker, more grounded continuation, but that version ultimately stalled over budget concerns.

The original film itself had already gone through a notorious production overhaul, including extensive reshoots of its final act. It has turnedthe franchise into one of those rare studio properties whose behind-the-scenes history almost rivals its on-screen apocalypse.

But Pitt returning to World War Z carries another layer of Hollywood history, especially given the actor’s hands-on role as a producer and his reputation for being deeply involved in the final shape of his films.

That history is particularly relevant now because Brad Pitt is also at the center of reported creative tensions surrounding Heart of the Beast, his upcoming survival thriller with director David Ayer. According to Puck, Pitt and Ayer disagreed over the film’s tone so strongly that they prepared separate cuts.

Three sources told Puck that Ayer’s broader version tested better, while Pitt’s more esoteric cut received support from producers Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton. Paramount eventually extended post-production and the final version reportedly remained closer to Ayer’s cut while incorporating Pitt’s suggestions.

That makes World War Z 2 an interesting reunion with the franchise that already has its own complicated Pitt-director history. Pitt and Marc Forster reportedly clashed over the original movie’s third act, which was substantially reworked during reshoots. Pitt’s producer-star role has similarly placed him close to the creative process on films such as Ad Astra, where director James Gray later discussed disagreements over the final version. 

After all those abandoned plans, that may be the most intriguing part of the announcement. The zombies are coming back, but almost everything surrounding them has changed.
