‘Bookends’: Cast, Plot, Release and More on Upcoming Indie Drama Ft. Oscar-Winner F. Murray Abraham
The indie genre may be quieter than Hollywood's glaring marketing, but no less important. Following the blockbuster rage from movies such as Iron Lung, Bookends falls gently into the laps of cinema. Twinkling with F. Murray Abraham's Oscar-tinted feature, Bookends is closing in fast, and with a team that has matched the intrigue.
Bookends strings together not only a thought provoking, observation-craving drama, but a cast that partakes in the drama just as openly.

Perhaps the highlight of the film, but not dimming the rest, F. Murray Abraham plays the role of Nate's grandfather. Named Saul Cohen for Bookends, Abraham will also portray being a survivor of 1940s Germany-occupied Europe. Noam Ash, who has also written Bookends for the screen, will play Nate in the film.
Caroline Aaron and Charlie Barnett don the roles of Nate's grandmother and love interest, Miriam Cohen and Dr. Daniel Green, respectively.
Jazelle Villanueva, Spencer Belko, Jared Reinfeldt, Michael Whang, Ben Thorpe, and Sandra Lafferty round out the cast, among others. They play Sarah, Matt, Instructor Rory, Max, Jan, and Magda, respectively, as per the film's official press release.
What is Bookends about?
Nate, a young novelist, stalled in life and love, moves back into his grandparents’ home and becomes a quiet witness to their unraveling routine. As his grandfather’s past resurfaces through fading memory, his grandmother resists the impending changes. The film delivers Nate's view of their apartment turning into a living archive of care, conflict, and devotion.
Between tending to them and falling for their doctor, the writer confronts adulthood, learning how love endures, adapts, and asks to be held differently over time.
No matter how tender, the anticipation is bound to build. To suffice, Bookends is closer than most would think.
When does Bookends arrive on screen?
Hitting the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Bookends is set to premiere on the festival screen on February 9, 2026. Filmmaker Mike Doyle helms the film alongside Noam Ash. Produced under 5X Media, producers Scott Einbinder, Alon Shtruzman, and Henry Russell Bergstein are also part of the Bookends crew.

Bookends might just be one of the first in 2026 to shift the 2025 indie roster over into its own hands. Inspired by the lived experiences of writer Noam Ash, Bookends poses as a heartfelt memoir of the spontaneity of life. Ash has described the film as being about people living on two opposite edges of life, and how they, ironically, turn out to be the perfect pairs, or more suited for each other, much like two Bookends.
