Bill Skarsgård has landed the lead role in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game PHYSINT, bringing one of modern cinema’s most unpredictable genre actors into Kojima’s next ambitious world. The casting arrives just days after Xbox became the game’s new publishing partner, giving the project a very different backdrop from the one originally announced. For Skarsgård, it is another intriguing turn in a career that has moved from Pennywise to Count Orlok, action villains, cult horror and now a Kojima game. 

That makes his latest casting particularly fitting for a creator whose games have always blurred the line between Hollywood spectacle and interactive storytelling.

Hideo Kojima revealed the casting during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast, with the announcement also presented through the event’s YouTube video. He confirmed Skarsgård as the protagonist and unveiled a new poster featuring the actor alongside previously announced cast member Charlee Fraser.

“I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for Physint will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said.

“We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.” 

Skarsgård joins Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe in the cast. The actor has already made a habit of choosing roles that rarely keep him in one cinematic box. From It and It: Chapter Two to Barbarian, John Wick: Chapter 4, Boy Kills World and Nosferatu, Skarsgård has repeatedly found himself at the intersection of horror, action and strange, physically demanding characters.

The announcement also adds another layer to PHYSINT after Xbox recently took over publishing duties following PlayStation’s departure from the project. Kojima Productions is already working with Xbox on OD, his horror game created with Jordan Peele and featuring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer.

There is something wonderfully Kojima-esque about casting the man behind Pennywise for a project that promises espionage rather than another straightforward horror role.

PHYSINT is being positioned as a major new chapter for Kojima Productions. The studio describes it as its third original IP and says Hideo Kojima considers the project the culmination of his 40-year career as a game creator. That description carries obvious weight for anyone familiar with his Metal Gear legacy, where stealth, espionage, cinematic performances and eccentric world-building became inseparable from the gameplay itself. 

PHYSINT appears designed to revisit that territory while using modern performance capture, technology and a cast drawn directly from film and television. Xbox has also emphasized that its collaboration with Kojima Productions extends beyond games into film and television. For Bill Skarsgård, the role marks another fascinating collision between his screen career and interactive storytelling. 

After playing monsters, assassins, antiheroes and gothic icons, he now gets to enter Kojima’s version of the spy thriller. PHYSINT is still developing, but Skarsgård’s casting has already given the project a distinctly cinematic face.
