Dune: Part Three is bringing together an embarrassment of A-list riches, and Robert Pattinson is among its most exciting additions. The actor, who has been one of the most recognizable and talked-about faces of the year, will step into the villainous role of Scytale. However, landing the part was no ordinary casting win for Pattinson, who wanted to join Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi trilogy so badly that he pursued an available character as soon as the opportunity arose. Now, he considers himself part of a saga that he believes will go down in history.

Even indicating that he watched Dune: Part Three, Robert Pattinson has opened up about chasing Scytale, finally joining the franchise, and finding the experience beyond anything he had hoped for.

Robert Pattinson may be more excited about his Dune role than fans

Robert Pattinson has finally watched Dune: Part Three, and the experience seems to have made an already enthusiastic actor even more appreciative of Denis Villeneuve's ambitious sci-fi saga. While talking to BAFTA, the actor has enormous faith in what the filmmaker has accomplished across the trilogy, believing that its conclusion will cement its place as something audiences return to for generations.

"The experience was just like, it is just beyond anything I could have hoped for," Pattinson said.

The enthusiasm goes back much further than his casting announcement. Pattinson revealed that he repeatedly called his agents, asking them to find him a way into the Dune universe.

"There’s got to be something. I want to be in that series somehow," was what he said.

When rumours emerged about two new characters, the actor had not even read Dune Messiah. However, after seeing Scytale's character brief and looking up the character, he knew exactly what he wanted.

"Oh, if that's the part that he's asking me if I was interested in it, then I'm like, I'm in. Immediately. Like, I don’t care. Like, that's literally my ideal part," Pattinson recalled to BAFTA.

If his The Odyssey pyramid comparison raised eyebrows, Robert Pattinson's plans for Scytale might leave Dune fans even more intrigued.

How Robert Pattinson got into Scytale's head

For Robert Pattinson, the trick to playing Scytale was apparently to have no tricks of his own. The actor focused on the character's ability to disappear into other people, observing that Scytale is "always in other characters' clothes." With no distinctive wardrobe or obvious identity to hold on to, the villain could become whoever the situation demanded, making him all the more difficult for Paul Atreides to anticipate.

The desert conditions, meanwhile, left Pattinson with considerably less room for overthinking. The actor joked that he did not have "a single functioning brain cell" in the heat, describing how he surrendered himself to whatever Denis Villeneuve wanted on set. It was an unusual route to playing a character whose greatest weapon is his mind, but Pattinson's commitment to Villeneuve's direction helped him bring Scytale's calculated unpredictability to life in Dune: Part Three.
