Ben Affleck has shared why he was banned by Instagram twice. When Hollywood’s elite take to social media, fans usually expect polished brand partnerships, curated vacation snapshots, or carefully crafted promotional posts for upcoming box office hits. Yet, for one celebrated actor and filmmaker known for keeping a notoriously low digital footprint, the online world proved to be far more complicated than expected. After cautiously dipping his toes into the realm of digital networking, Ben Affleck quickly discovered that automated algorithms have zero regard for cinematic pedigree,

This led to a hilarious realization when he was unexpectedly locked out of his own account not once, but twice.

Ben Affleck explains why Instagram banned him twice

During an interview with Variety published on Wednesday, October 7, the 54-year-old actor admitted that he would make an exceptionally poor social media influencer, revealing that his brief brushes with digital platforms even resulted in him being locked out of his account twice.

“I got banned from Instagram twice for impersonating myself,” Affleck told the outlet.

“I had six followers. It was my kids and some of their friends. It was just an excuse for me to look at [my kids’] social media accounts,” he added.

Reflecting on his experiences as a parent to his three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner - Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13 - the Animals star explained to Variety that he sees little value in actors maintaining an active digital footprint. According to Affleck, growing up in an era before the constant scrutiny of social media shaped his deep appreciation for privacy. He noted that there was once a time when daily actions were not permanently archived online, emphasizing that aging has given him a profound understanding of how truly valuable a private life remains.

Weighing in on the modern oversaturation of celebrity culture, Affleck argued that it would not at all affect his appreciation of iconic performers like Daniel Day-Lewis, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, and Denzel Washington if they constantly broadcast their day-to-day lives. Acknowledging that his stance might paint him as an out-of-touch traditionalist, the Oscar winner maintained that an actor's core responsibility is to preserve a sense of mystery and protect the illusion of their craft.
