Long before the red carpets, Hollywood premieres, and private jets, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were just two broke young actors trying to make it. The longtime friends famously pooled their limited audition earnings into a shared bank account. If one of them landed a commercial, they could use the money to cover the train ride to New York for the next audition.
What started as a practical way to survive the early days of their careers eventually became the foundation of one of Hollywood’s most enduring partnerships. Now, that partnership has gone far beyond simply helping each other land the next gig. Damon and Affleck have turned their decades-long friendship into a full-fledged Hollywood business through their production company, Artists Equity.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck tackle unfair studio accounting
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are taking aim at the way Hollywood has traditionally handled profits. Through Artists Equity, Damon and Affleck have negotiated performance-based bonuses with streamers that can extend beyond the biggest stars to the wider cast and crew. The idea is simple. When a movie succeeds, the people who helped make it should share in that success.
It gives everyone a stronger financial stake in the project and makes the business side of filmmaking feel a little more fair.

Gerry Cardinale, the primary financial partner and co-founder of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's production company, Artists Equity, recently summed up the duo’s contrasting ambitions, reported by Variety.
“Matt wants to win Oscars and Ben wants to make money. Together, they’re the perfect person,” Variety reported.
For years, Hollywood and the media painted Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as two very different stars. But behind the scenes, those differences ended up becoming one of their biggest strengths.
Instead of choosing one path, they have built a two-track distribution strategy that allows both sides of the partnership to chase what matters most to them.
What makes Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's partnership work so well
Matt Damon is all about the storytelling. He focuses on giving filmmakers creative freedom and making sure each project delivers. His push for quality keeps Artists Equity focused on prestige projects and top talent. Ben Affleck, meanwhile, takes a bigger-picture approach as CEO, keeping a close eye on where the industry is headed. He is focused on landing major distribution deals, including a theatrical partnership with Sony Pictures and a multi-year streaming deal with Netflix.

And because there is little ego between them, their different priorities do not clash. Instead, they balance each other out. Damon keeps Affleck from chasing projects that are all business and no heart, while Affleck makes sure Damon’s more artistic projects also have a strong commercial plan behind them.
