Seems like Richard Linklater is finding it hard to find funding for his new trilogy. Making a trilogy is no joke. Keeping the same consistency intact throughout the installments while building on the narrative can be tough. But few directors have proved that, despite its challenges, trilogies can be made and can become cinematic masterpieces if the execution is right. Those who have seen the Before trilogy can vouch for this claim and the capabilities of Richard Linklater as a director. 

Still, Linklater is having trouble finding financial support for his next trilogy planned around the transcendentalists.

Richard Linklater’s upcoming film project has officially expanded into a trilogy, though it continues to face a major roadblock. In a recent interview with The Atlantic, Linklater shared that he has spent nearly two decades trying to bring the passion project to life, running into a significant wall along the way. According to Linklater, the primary obstacle holding back the multi-part production is securing adequate financing.   

“I’ve been developing, for a number of years, this trilogy of films about the transcendentalists,” said Linklater in the interview.

“But it’s been a challenge to get that made,” he further added.

The film will revolve around the Transcendentalist literary movement of the 1830s and 1840s. Featuring foundational figures like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller, the ambitious works are envisioned as historical hangout films exploring the early roots of modern feminism, environmentalism, and abolitionism, according to what he told The Atlantic.

Although the Boyhood filmmaker shared an optimistic update about the project's progress in 2025, the situation appears to have shifted over the past year. Linklater also emphasized that the iconic historical figures he intends to bring to life have never previously been depicted on film.

The Before Sunrise director had allegedly planned everything for his much-anticipated trilogy, from cast to theme and mood. 

According to a recent report by World of Reel, Richard Linklater plans to transform this compelling era of history into a relaxed hangout movie, which would be quite a fascinating approach. Moreover, previous reports indicated that Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, and Ethan Hawke were lined up to star, and all signs pointed to the project serving as the director's next big feature. 

Just last year, Hawke, who has recently expressed his disappointment over losing the lead in Titanic, revealed that filming was slated to kick off in 2026, noting that this milestone collaboration would mark his tenth feature with Linklater - a project he confidently predicted would stand the test of time. But now, the future of the trilogy seems uncertain, though Linklater remains enthusiastic about making it happen.
