Speaking at the Beef Season 2 LA premiere, Lee Sung Jin opened up about his deep-rooted love for the X-Men universe and the characters that resonated with him most growing up. Rather than gravitating toward the usual fan-favorite leaders, his attention was always drawn to those who existed just outside the spotlight.
“I love Gambit. I also love a lot of side characters. I love Jubilee. You know everyone goes to Cyclops and Wolverine. But for me growing up, I always loved the kind of supporting members.” he told Variety at the event.
His connection to X-Men goes far beyond fandom; it is rooted in childhood memories. Lee Sung Jin recalled growing up watching the animated series with his father on Saturday mornings and reading the comics together, experiences that made the franchise deeply personal to him. That sense of nostalgia and emotional attachment played a big role in his decision to get involved, as he admitted to Variety that saying yes to an X-Men project felt almost inevitable, no matter how busy he was.
That personal preference is now fueling curiosity about how his storytelling instincts might translate into Marvel’s next big mutant chapter.
A familiar creative circle shapes the mutant reboot
Lee Sung Jin is not stepping into the world of Marvel with X-Men Reboot alone. Alongside him, Joanna Calo, known for their work in Thunderbolts*, has also been brought on board, continuing a creative partnership that has already proven successful in television.
Director Jake Schreier recently confirmed that the duo is actively working on a new draft for the X-Men reboot, signaling steady progress behind the scenes. Their collaboration reunites a team that has contributed to standout projects like Beef and The Bear, both known for their character-driven storytelling.

"We're still developing. You know, one of the exciting things that's tying into Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season. Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny's show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again," Schreier shared in a conversation with Collider.
This reunion hints at a tonal shift for the X-Men franchise, one that leans more into emotional depth and interpersonal conflict rather than just spectacle. As Marvel continues to develop its next era of mutant storytelling, Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo’s involvement adds a promising layer of authenticity and emotional depth.
