Few fictional worlds are as instantly recognisable as Harry Potter, and few authors are as closely tied to their creations as J.K. Rowling. While the writer became a global sensation for bringing Hogwarts to life, her public views have sparked fierce debate and strained her relationships with stars such as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who grew up playing her characters. Now, the BBC is turning its attention to Rowling’s complicated legacy.
The upcoming docuseries will explore the life, influence, and fiercely debated legacy of the author behind one of the world’s most successful fantasy franchises.
BBC finds its new subject in J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter conquered bookshelves, cinemas, and childhoods worldwide, but its creator’s story has grown considerably more complicated than a trip to Hogwarts. The BBC has announced a two-part documentary about J.K. Rowling, currently titled J.K. Rowling, tracing her remarkable journey from a struggling single mother to a publishing sensation whose public views have divided fans and former allies alike.
The first episode will revisit Rowling’s rise, from writing in Edinburgh cafés to building a literary empire that transformed children’s books and brought millions of young readers together. The second will explore her increasingly prominent role in public debates, including feminism, free speech, Scottish independence, and gender identity, as social media intensified the divisions surrounding her views.

The BBC announced that the series will combine rare archival material, Rowling’s own statements, and interviews with those who witnessed her journey. Produced by Rogan Scotland for BBC Two, BBC Scotland, and iPlayer, the documentary will examine how a writer who united generations through fiction became a public figure capable of splitting the very audience that once celebrated her.
As the BBC turns its attention to an author who continues to stand by her debated views, it is worth revisiting the previous documentary on J.K. Rowling.
J.K. Rowling's only other documentary
In 2007, J.K. Rowling let cameras follow her beyond the magic of Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life. Directed by James Runcie, the documentary caught the bestselling author during an emotional milestone: finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows after 17 years of bringing the wizarding world to life.

The film also took Rowling back to the Edinburgh flat where her extraordinary journey began, offering a glimpse of the woman behind the publishing empire. She spoke about losing her mother, revealed how depression influenced the terrifying Dementors, and prepared for a book launch guarded against spoilers. With the BBC now preparing to revisit Rowling’s life and contested legacy, the 2007 documentary offers an earlier portrait of the author before her public image became so deeply divisive.
