That extraordinary legacy finally gets its own spotlight, with B.B. King’s estate teaming up with Winter State Entertainment for a documentary.

The King of the Blues is getting a royal treatment, as per Variety, and his estate already has the right company in its corner. The B.B. King Music Company and the Estate of B.B. King are teaming up with Winter State Entertainment for a feature documentary celebrating the musician’s life, music, influence, and enduring legacy.

The film will trace B.B. King’s remarkable climb from the Mississippi Delta to international superstardom, following the guitarist and vocalist who helped push the blues into rock, soul, jazz, and popular music. With a career spanning decades, B.B. King became far more than a blues legend. He became a musical measuring stick, and one that proved remarkably difficult to surpass.

According to Variety, the project is being executive produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Vassal Benford, with Hamid Torabpour and Camille Torabpour producing through Winter State Entertainment. Leslie Small will direct, while Lani Evans, Dr. Mark Smith, Nick Hagen, and Sylvester Stewart Jr. join as producers. With archival material and the estate’s historical resources available, the documentary has plenty of Lucille-approved history to unpack.

B.B. King’s journey began far from the bright lights of musical superstardom, on a Mississippi plantation where Riley B. King picked cotton and worked as a tractor driver. Gospel gave him his first musical language, and he later formed the Famous St. John’s Gospel Singers. Then Memphis called, and a radio booth helped give him his name.

As a street performer, B.B. King quickly learned that the blues could put money in the hat when gospel could not, even borrowing gospel melodies by swapping “Lord” for “baby.” Singing also helped him overcome a severe childhood stutter. His musical life nearly ended in a burning Arkansas dance hall, but rescuing his guitar from the flames gave him Lucille, the name that would follow his career.
