'Barbie' director, Greta Gerwig opens up about feeling "scared" and "terrified" on directing her upcoming Narnia projects for Netflix.

‘Barbie’ Director Greta Gerwig on Why She’s “terrified” of Directing the Narnia Movies For Netflix

Greta Gerwig is ready for her blockbuster weekend with the film Barbie, which is
now showing in theaters. Margot Robbie plays Barbie and Ryan Gosling portrays
Ken in Gerwig’s interpretation of Mattel’s iconic fashion doll. After months of
hype and build-up, audiences are ready to be thrilled by her vibrant and
hilarious depiction of Barbie Land, where everyone is happy.

After Barbie, Gerwig will be directing at least two movies based on C. S. Lewis’
Narnia books for Netflix. However, she revealed feeling “terrified” about taking
on these projects. And it is not without reason.

BARBIE DIRECTOR OPENS UP ABOUT HER FEARS AND HOPES FOR THE NEW NETFLIX NARNIA
MOVIES

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie wardrobe now opens up straight to the magical world of
Narnia. A big responsibility lies upon her as she is set to revive the enchanted
realms of Narnia. If everything goes right, she will be the first female
director to bring Narnia to life. However, with Netflix having her on board, she
is a tad bit “scared” if she will live up to expectations.

The magical Narnia is where talking animals coexist with mythical creatures all
under the rule of a majestic lion named Aslan who stands as the true king. The
last film adaptations of this world by Walden Media along with Disney and Fox
started with the hit The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe in 2005 and went on to make over $745 million dollars.

In an interview with the Inside Total Film podcast, Gerwig openly admits to
feeling “scared” and “terrified” about taking on this challenge. The Lady Bird
director is a fan of Narnia and feels responsible to honor Lewis’ legacy while
making a fresh adaptation for fans. Now, she looks to create characters with
intriguing plots and unexpected twists that will keep audiences hooked. And that
is no easy feat to achieve.

The director is thrilled about the opportunity to bring her unique vision with a
new cast to the Narnia movies

“It’s extraordinary,” she remarked. Gerwig aims not only to introduce a new
generation of fans to the wonders of Narnia but also to reignite the magic for
those who have cherished it for years.

Can Greta Gerwig live up to her charm and not repeat the Disney-Fox disaster
that ended the franchise?

BALANCING FAN EXPECTATIONS AND NETFLIX IS A MAJOR CHALLENGE FOR THE DIRECTOR

Greta Gerwig has left her mark on her stories, infusing them with humor, vibrant
colors, and relatability. However, taking on the role of Narnia presents a whole
new set of challenges compared to directing Barbie. Narnia isn’t a simple story;
it’s an entire world that demands careful handling. Moreover, Gerwig will need
to collaborate with Netflix, which has its unique vision and expectations. The
previous two Narnia movies, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,
adapted by Disney and Fox, deviated from the books. The movies lost some of the
enchantment and awe that characterized Narnia by delving into darker and more
violent tones. This led to disappointment among fans who gradually lost interest
in the franchise.

Gerwig must avoid repeating these mistakes while bringing a fresh perspective
into the upcoming Narnia movies. She needs to breathe life into this magical
world for both existing fans and newcomers alike. Striking a balance between
fantasy and reality adventure and drama humor and emotion will be crucial for
success. Additionally, her work has the potential to inspire a generation of
storytellers who share her passion for Narnia. The Little Women director’s
success could repeat with Narnia if Netflix doesn’t interfere with her vision.
