The Backrooms’ creepy world is still developing, as a new report says a sequel to the first film is already in the very early stages of development after its breakout success. Although the project is yet to receive the official greenlight, director Kane Parsons is said to be in search of a screenwriting partner to help shape the next installment of the franchise, as per Deadline. Therefore, it seems plans for a follow-up are beginning to come into focus.

“I think there are several things I’m looking at right now. Backrooms, I would have a very hard time saying it’s done. I guess that’s what I can say, but I expect to be seeing a little bit more in the not-so-distant future,” Parsons had additionally explained in a chat with Screen Rant.

The conversation about the sequel gained momentum after Backrooms’ opening to strong box-office numbers, making the internet-born horror phenomenon a massive success. The franchise had hit a nerve beyond its online origins, and the film’s strong performance proved it. It also fueled interest in expanding the eerie universe with future installments.

Before fans look ahead to a potential sequel, the success of the original Backrooms helps explain why there is already so much interest in returning to its unsettling universe.

The original Backrooms turned a viral horror concept into a blockbuster hit

With a sequel reportedly on the way, interest has now turned to the original YouTube film and the remarkable success that made it a box-office phenomenon. Backrooms follows a young filmmaker who finds himself trapped in an enigmatic and seemingly endless backroom, a maze-like world that exists outside of reality. He seeks an exit and finds himself in disturbing places, filled with disturbing things, where the line between nightmare and reality is thin.

The film expands the viral YouTube mythology of Kane Parsons into a large-scale horror story. The film quickly became one of the biggest success stories of the year, opening to a stellar $118 million worldwide. Made with less than $10 million, it exceeded expectations far beyond and showed that horror properties that originated on the internet could succeed on the big screen.

While Backrooms 2 is a far cry from reality, early indications are that Kane Parsons is not ready to let the franchise go. With a writing collaborator reportedly in the works and interest in the series stronger than ever, fans have reason to believe the eerie universe could be set to expand beyond its first blockbuster outing. For now, the question is what the next chapter of Backrooms will end up looking like.
