Moviegoers have warmly embraced yet another film from a YouTube creator. Filmmaker Kane Parsons’ Backrooms has added a $38 million milestone on its debut, setting a new record for A24. Previously, the horror film Obsession, from YouTube creator and filmmaker Curry Barker, stunned the industry by earning more than $100 million worldwide on a production budget of less than $1 million.

Now, if the loud and growing chatter surrounding Backrooms is any indication, the horror film is up for an impressive theatrical run.

Backrooms made $38 million domestically on its opening day across 3,442 theaters, to become A24’s best debut, as reported by Variety. The highly anticipated horror film was initially expected to make around $20 million during its opening weekend. However, projections continued to rise amid growing chatter surrounding the release, and also thanks in large part to its strong $10.4 million performance in preview screenings.

The movie is now expected to earn between $85 million and $90 million over the weekend. That said, it could surpass the current record holder for A24's biggest debut, Civil War. The strong opening number clearly indicates massive audience interest in the film, while its unsettling visuals and unique concept have earned praise from critics.

Based on filmmaker Kane Parsons' viral YouTube series, Backrooms follows a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to an otherworldly dimension inside his showroom. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass. It currently holds a 7.2 rating on IMDb.

Now, the film's success has also sparked questions about whether a sequel could be made in the future.

Is a sequel to Backrooms possible?

As of now, A24 has not commented on a Backrooms sequel or officially greenlit a follow-up project. However, filmmaker Kane Parsons has commented on his plans for Backrooms. He previously revealed that he has more stories set within the Backrooms universe. So, a sequel could happen in the future.

“I have a lot more plans and a lot more to do,” he said in an interview with Polygon.

"I went as far as [I] could with it at the moment. I thought it would be a much slower road to get to where things are now,0 he further added. ”

While there is no confirmation or details of the sequel, there is hope for one in the future. Moreover, if Backrooms maintains its current momentum and continues to break box-office records, it could make a strong case for a sequel. Until then, fans can head to theaters to watch Backrooms on the big screen or binge the viral YouTube series that inspired the film.
