The Oprah interview that roped in millions of viewers became as popular as it did because it was a rarity. The last time an ex-member of the royal institution sat down to give a “tell-all” interview was Princess Dianna with BBC in 1995. However, Markle had a bone to pick with another institution that is unpopularly popular, especially when the subject is ‘toxicity.’

Markle’s statements about the royal family are mostly a hit and a miss owing to the political nature of the discussion. However, Hollywood is a field with a different pitch. And the rules are also different. When asked about her take on both ‘#MeToo’ and ‘#OscarsSoWhite’ which provoked many, by Variety in 2022, the actress chose to speak on the nuances of discrimination, so much so that they didn’t “have a name for it at that time.”

The Sussex Royal smartly stated that “It forced a lot of women to live with this idea of staying silent, not being disruptive, not giving voice to the things that might create concern or discomfort.”

Managing a career as both a senior royal and an actor would be difficult. But the Duchess of Sussex continued to reject the idea of an acting comeback even after quitting as a senior royal. While one could assume that she wants to scale up as a producer, her statement about the toxicity engraved in the industry also hints at discrimination being the key factor behind her quitting acting.
