Joe Russo has now made a clear promise about Thor’s role in Avengers: Doomsday: the character will return to the more battle-hardened version seen in Avengers: Infinity War. That is a notable shift for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, whose MCU journey has moved between Shakespearean grandeur, Taika Waititi’s comedy, and the deeply vulnerable version seen in Endgame. With the Russo Brothers returning, Doomsday is clearly reaching back into the emotional and visual language that made Infinity War such a major turning point for the God of Thunder.

The interesting part is that this is not simply about bringing back an old costume or recreating the Stormbreaker-era swagger. The Russos are talking about a particular emotional register for Thor, and that distinction could matter when the character faces Doctor Doom.

In an interview with CBR, Joe Russo discussed how Chris Hemsworth has been able to reshape Thor under different directors, pointing to the very different interpretations the character has received across the MCU. Russo said the actor has shown an impressive range. 

"It's fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has…That's what we're going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor…We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle…as you can see from the trailers, it's going to be a hell of a fight," Joe Russo said. 

That choice, according to CBR, takes Doomsday back to one of Thor’s most consequential stretches in the MCU. In Infinity War, he was not simply the Avenger looking for another fight. He had lost Asgard, Loki and Heimdall, and then pushed himself through the Nidavellir sequence to forge Stormbreaker because he believed stopping Thanos was the one thing he could still accomplish. That combination of grief, purpose and sheer battlefield determination is exactly what Russo appears to be describing.

And then comes the intriguing part. Doomsday is not merely recreating that Thor. It is putting that version of him against a new kind of Marvel threat, with Doctor Doom now positioned at the center of the next Avengers event.

Marvel is making that connection unusually literal in the lead-up to Avengers: Doomsday. Avengers: Endgame has returned to theaters as Avengers: Endgame Encore, featuring four minutes of new footage that expands its connection to the upcoming Avengers event. The added material includes new moments involving Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, giving audiences fresh pieces of the puzzle before Doomsday arrives on December 18.

One of the new scenes is particularly revealing, as Bruce Banner is shown working on a serum designed to stop him from transforming into the Hulk before Doctor Doom suddenly enters the facility. The sequence ends before their confrontation is resolved, leaving the obvious question of whether Banner or Hulk will carry that storyline into Doomsday. Another new moment at the end of the credits reworks the famous metal-clanging sound from Iron Man, this time showing Doom creating his metal mask. 

With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, Thor’s next battle is already being framed around everything he has survived. Doomsday therefore has a chance to make its returning heroes feel connected to the history that made them important in the first place.
