Saying goodbye to a definitive role is never easy, but for Chris Evans, walking away from Captain America after Avengers: Endgame was a boundary he initially swore to protect. Despite receiving a steady stream of creative pitches from Marvel in the years following 2019, Evans repeatedly turned them down. That streak of rejections makes his upcoming return in Avengers: Doomsday all the more monumental, signaling that Marvel finally cracked a narrative code too compelling to pass up.

Now, Evans has shared what was so riveting about Doomsday that got him to take up that Star-Spangled mantle once again.

Chris Evans hinted at his comeback while speaking on stage at an in-conversation event at Fan Expo Boston on Sunday afternoon, August 9. Evans described Steve's journey throughout Avengers: Doomsday, saying that when the plot pushes him to his limits, he experiences something truly painful and undergoes a true assessment of his nature and ideals.

"This one was brutal, and a really good examination into his [Steve Rogers] nature and his values,” Evans was heard saying.

Evans says that considering the directors' past work with the character, that intensity is not really that surprising. He noted that the Russo brothers have always enjoyed bashing up Steve Rogers, joking that it is practically their favorite thing to do to him in all of the movies they have collaborated on. It looks like this tendency will continue dramatically in the upcoming film.

That is consistent with Evans's previous remarks regarding the character's treatment by filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo. According to those remarks, the producers have constructed Steve's storyline around his capacity to endure extreme suffering and strain without compromising his convictions, putting him to the test both mentally and physically to demonstrate why he continues to fight for justice. Evans has made it apparent that Steve will have more difficulties this time around than he has in the past.

With the return of Chris Evans in the multiverse saga, fans are curious to know which version of the super soldier from the comics he will be playing in the film. 

Given that Steve Rogers gave Sam Wilson the shield at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, part of the mystery is what version of Rogers viewers will get to see. In response, Anthony Mackie told Variety at the San Diego Comic Con that Steve Rogers is not taking back the role of Captain America and instead directs fans to his comic book persona as Nomad for background.

This information supports long-standing theories that Steve's life after Endgame, particularly his marriage to Peggy Carter, will play a significant role in his Avengers: Doomsday storyline. On December 18, 2026, Doomsday will open in theaters, reintroducing Steve Rogers along with several returning characters into a plot that Evans claims is intended to hurt.
