Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the rare shows that grew from a Nickelodeon cartoon into a true cultural landmark, praised for its respectful use of Asian and Indigenous influences and unusually deep storytelling for a children’s series. Critics and scholars often point to it as a breakthrough in Western animation, blending Eastern philosophy and serialized character arcs in a way that reshaped what TV for young audiences could be.
Yet despite its legacy and a devoted global fanbase, recent decisions around new Avatar projects have left many feeling the franchise is being treated as just another piece of corporate IP rather than a story world to be protected and nurtured.
Into that frustration stepped Uncle Iroh himself, who has now taken matters into his own hands by publicly calling out Paramount’s leadership.

Greg Baldwin calls out Paramount over Avatar: The Last Airbender
Uncle Iroh’s voice actor, Greg Baldwin, has unleashed a blistering public rant at Paramount, arguing that the studio fundamentally does not care about Avatar: The Last Airbender or what it represents. In posts shared on X, Baldwin framed his criticism through decades of industry experience, saying the current leadership feels disconnected from the creative spirit that made the series resonate in the first place.
" Nickelodeon will never hire me again anyway…so why not drop a truth bomb? I reiterate. Paramount doesn’t care about ATLA," the voice actor, who also portrays Aku in Samurai Jack, said in the winding vent following the cancellation of an upcoming game based on the show by Saber interactive.
He described studio executives as the last people who should be steering a story as emotionally layered as ATLA. Baldwin called them “slippery and clueless,” and accused what he referred to as a “new regime” of showing contempt for a series rooted in ideas of grace, redemption, and resistance against oppressive power.
According to Baldwin, ATLA is “a mystery” to the people now making decisions about its future, and he believes they do not value the franchise beyond its commercial potential. He even went a step further, joking that if anyone in Hollywood should be replaced by AI, it would be studio executives rather than creatives.
This tension has only intensified as the franchise’s next major project faces the aftermath of an unexpected turmoil.
Leaks and setbacks cloud the future of Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s animated return with Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was meant to mark a major new chapter. Developed by Avatar Studios as part of a larger slate that includes Seven Havens, the film was positioned as a cornerstone for Paramount’s streaming ambitions. An early April breach led to short clips appearing online, which quickly escalated into the full film circulating across piracy platforms. What started as a small leak spiraled into widespread distribution, complete with watch parties, bootleg copies, and even early user listings before the official release.

The consequences extend beyond piracy numbers. The leak risks impacting viewership when the film reaches Paramount+, while also undermining years of work from the creative team. It has also intensified criticism over the decision to prioritize streaming over a theatrical rollout, adding another layer to fan frustration, something that Greg Baldwin seems to have articulated now.
