Idris Elba denied rumors that he was going to replace 007 while clearly stating the reason behind this. While the hunt for the new James Bond began in mid-May 2026, the discourse started around it way before this, when Daniel Craig hung up his boots as the British spy in 2021. Since a series of names have been thrown into contention for the coveted role, but the makers never approved any of them or even hinted at the possibility. The list of names is long and dazzling with contenders like Henry Cavill, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner, but the one most debated is surely Idris Elba.

But his recent statements might just have put every rumor and discussion around his candidacy to bed.

Prior to Daniel Craig's departure in 2021, Idris Elba, who frequently portrays heroic characters that display strong leadership qualities and currently co-stars with Nicholas Galitzine in Masters of the Universe, has been predicted to assume the 007 role for so long. However, Elba claims the assertions were never true in a recent cover interview with British GQ on Monday.

"It was never legit. It was always just a rumour. I've always felt that it's not a realistic thing," he stated.

Elba added that he thought Ian Fleming's original character should not change that much. In his opinion, the character should not be turned into something woke, just because Bond is so unrealistic, but a hint of reality is fine. He believes that one must be honest about what the character ultimately provides, which is escapism. Trying too much to satisfy everyone's palate might just be pushing it.

“Bond is big all over the world. And (audiences) won't (all) go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period," Elba added.

The rumors started when Daniel Craig stated during the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace's premiere that Barack Obama's election to the US presidency might have indicated that society was ready for a Black Bond. Elba clarified in the GQ interview that fans took that remark to heart. Although he was flattered by the rumors, he never thought a Black actor would be accepted as the legendary spy.
