Some stories refuse to stay buried. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of them, the evidence being how it keeps finding new ways to stalk audiences even today. Now, the Count is preparing to return in a form that depends less on a face in the shadows and more on the voice waiting there.

Audible is giving the gothic classic an unusually expansive treatment, assembling prominent actors from across the world for an adaptation designed to make the familiar tale feel considerably less familiar. Bram Stoker’s immortal predator is returning, but this time his voice will travel a lot farther than Transylvania.

Audible gives Dracula a star-powered new voice

Audible has announced its English-language cast for 'Dracula,' with Jonathan Bailey taking on the title role of the Count alongside Ella Purnell as Mina. Aimee Lou Wood plays Lucy, Louis Partridge plays Jonathan Harker, David Jonsson plays Dr. Seward, and Lesley Manville takes the role of Mrs. Westenra. Joining them are Johnny Flynn as Renfield, Francis Lovehall as Arthur Holmwood, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who steps into the role of Professor Van Helsing.

The production is set to debut on October 1, just in time for the Halloween chills to catch up.

The casting also shifts attention toward Mina, whose investigation sits at the heart of this version (via Deadline). Her search begins after her fiancé, Jonathan (Partridge), disappears in Transylvania, pulling together fragments of evidence as Dracula moves from distant threat to increasingly intimate danger. That gives Bailey’s Count and Fallout star Purnell’s Mina the central dramatic tension, while Gyllenhaal’s Van Helsing enters as the figure prepared to confront what Mina has uncovered.

The English cast also happens to be only the first layer of Audible’s experiment. Rather than simply translating one recording, the company has commissioned separate productions with local ensembles, turning 'Dracula' into a massive multinational audio project.

The Count may be familiar, but the voices confronting him are changing with every language and cultural register.

Dracula crosses borders through its international voices

For the French edition, Omar Sy will play Dracula opposite Deva Cassel as Mina. Italy gets Riccardo Scamarcio and Benedetta Porcaroli, while Matthias Schweighöfer and Jeanne Goursaud lead the German production. The Castilian Spanish version pairs Asier Etxeandía with Claudia Salas, and the Latin American Spanish edition features José María de Tavira and Esmeralda Pimentel. Each language production also carries its own ensemble cast.

That leaves Brazilian Portuguese as the remaining piece of the seven-language rollout, with its cast and release date still to be announced. English, French, Italian, Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish arrive October 1, while German follows February 9, 2027.

Behind all seven productions is director Mary Lambert, making her audiobook directing debut, with Robyn Ahern adapting the material and composer Ilan Eshkeri supplying an original score alongside an immersive soundscape. The result is less a routine audiobook casting exercise than a deliberate attempt to preserve the psychological unease that has kept Stoker’s creation alive for generations, at a global scale.
