The Odyssey star Samantha Morton has spoken out about her struggles to find acting work in the last year, blaming Hollywood ageism for the slowdown in her career. The two-time Academy Award nominee is considered one of Britain's most accomplished actors, with praise for performances in Sweet and Lowdown, In America, Minority Report, The Walking D***, The Whale and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Most recently, she joined Christopher Nolan’s eagerly awaited epic The Odyssey. 

Despite joining one of Hollywood's most anticipated films, Morton says her career has faced unexpected challenges since production wrapped. 

Samantha Morton recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and candidly said that she has not had an acting role since filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey almost a year ago, and she is blaming Hollywood's habit of steering clear of seasoned women for her slump. Despite her resources, the industry’s shifting dynamics have made it increasingly difficult to find work. Morton also said that Nolan's casting choice helped restore her confidence and her belief that good work can still be rewarded. 

“I’ve got really good agents and a manager, but at the end of the day, I’m 49,” she said, suggesting that age has become a major obstacle in finding new acting opportunities.

During the same Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morton said she struggled in spite of having good agents. She also believes that hard work and persistence pay off eventually. She stated that working alongside Nolan became one of the most notable things she managed to achieve in her career. Even though she is looking forward to acting for many years to come, Morton realizes that actors depend on filmmakers believing in them.

Morton joins Nolan’s star-studded ensemble that cast the acclaimed actor in one of the epic’s most complex female roles.
