Dr. Samira Mohan will not be scrubbing back into Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center when The Pitt returns for Season 3. Over the past two seasons, Supriya Ganesh's resident physician became one of the show's most empathetic and grounded voices, battling burnout, impossible shifts, and the relentless pressure of working under Dr. Robby. Now, as Season 3 prepares to unleash another wave of chaos inside PTMC, Ganesh is finally breaking her silence on the creative decision that wrote Mohan out of the series.
So what exactly did Ganesh have to say about Dr. Mohan's shocking departure from The Pitt?

While reflecting on The Pitt's exploration of workplace dynamics and representation, Ganesh admitted that many of the show's themes resonated deeply with her own experiences. Referencing the entertainment industry's long-standing "boys' club" culture, the actress explained why storylines involving Dr. Robby and Dr. Langdon felt so authentic to perform. However, when addressing Dr. Mohan's departure, Ganesh made it clear that the decision did not come from her, revealing that executive producers R. Scott Gemmill, Noah Wyle, and John Wells ultimately chose to write the character out.
“They work with such intention on the show and make all the choices that they make for that reason, so I think it’s better to ask them for answers.” Ganesh told in a Los Angeles Times interview.
Despite her departure, Ganesh spoke warmly about her time on the series and the overwhelming support she has received from viewers. "I'm going to treasure all the memories I had working with these two and everyone else," she shared, admitting that she also feels sad for fans who won't get to continue following Mohan's journey. Her co-star, Isa Briones, praised the character's impact on representation and recalled messages from viewers who finally felt seen on screen.
But while Mohan's chapter has officially closed, the doors of PTMC are about to open to an entirely new wave of chaos.
The Pitt season 3 will pick up just four months later
The Pitt is expected to return in early January 2027, with production officially kicking off in June 2026 after the writers' room opened in March. Unlike the nearly year-long gap between previous seasons, Season 3 jumps ahead just four months, moving the action from Season 2's intense Fourth of July shift to early November. The colder setting will introduce new emergency challenges, including snow, black ice, and a fresh influx of seasonal trauma cases at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

While Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Isa Briones, Fiona Dourif, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and several other familiar faces are set to return, Mohan's absence will leave a noticeable void inside the emergency department. The new season will largely focus on Dr. Robby's return from a months-long sabbatical as he attempts to rebuild strained relationships and confront the emotional fallout of his past actions. Meanwhile, night-shift senior resident Dr. Parker Ellis, played by Ayesha Harris, has earned a promotion to series regular status as PTMC prepares for another demanding year.
And while Dr. Mohan won't be walking back through the doors of PTMC, her impact on both the emergency department and The Pitt's audience is set to linger long after her final shift.
