Arnold Schwarzenegger’s one of the most iconic scenes from Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the moment when his character meets his fate. The T-800 lowers itself into molten steel, making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that no trace of the technology remains. It is one of the film’s most emotional moments.

Now, more than three decades later, that unforgettable scene seems to have been recreated. And it is not for a film. Schwarzenegger’s T-800 has inspired an AI robot company to prepare a Terminator-style farewell for retired humanoid robots.

Robots jump into molten steel for a Terminator 2-style farewell

Robotics company Figure gave its decommissioned F.02 humanoid robots a Terminator 2-style farewell by sending them off to molten steel. This was not only inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic scene from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but seemingly also by the legend himself. When company CEO Brett Adcock reportedly asked on X how to give the robots a proper farewell, Schwarzenegger commented, suggesting that the robots should be melted down.

The San Jose, California-based company will replace its F.02 robots with the new F.03 generation. As the company decided to retire the F.02 robots, it also chose to melt them down to protect the proprietary hardware inside. The robots were sent to a steel foundry in Finland for their farewell and remained functional until the last moment, when they jumped autonomously into a 75-ton furnace.

One of the robots even held up a thumbs-up sign before melting down, as per the images and clip shared by the company. The result was an awe-inspiring scene that resembled the original in Terminator 2. Before this farewell, the robots were trained by engineers to jump onto large airbags in California. As per a blog post by the company, the resulting metal was brought back by the company and turned into a limited series of artifacts.

So, the company found the perfect way to bid goodbye to the robots. And it is understandable that the scene brings back a wave of nostalgia, perhaps inspiring viewers to rewatch the sci-fi film once again.

Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as the Terminator, while Robert Patrick played the T-1000. Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong took on the roles of Sarah Connor and John Connor, respectively. Rewatching the iconic scene from Terminator 2 might as well be another way to remember this real-life Terminator-style farewell for the robots.
