Matt Damon could hardly believe Tom Holland had never watched The Matrix after hearing the surprising confession. As Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey prepares to storm theatres worldwide, the on-screen Odysseus and Telemachus of Ithaca have once again traded mythical battles for an off-screen moment that fans eagerly wait to witness. This time, however, it was not the voyage home or the Trojan W** making headlines, but a blockbuster confession about Holland being oblivious to The Matrix's greatness that left Damon completely stunned.
Matt Damon wasn't expecting Tom Holland's biggest revelation to involve another blockbuster. As it turns out even superheroes have blind spots when it comes to The Matrix.

During their appearance on Complex’s GOAT Talk, Matt Damon revealed The Matrix as one of the films he wishes he could have starred in, calling it a groundbreaking cinematic experience led perfectly by Keanu Reeves. The conversation, however, took an unexpected turn when Tom Holland casually admitted he had never actually watched the 1999 sci-fi classic. Visibly stunned, Damon repeatedly asked if Holland was serious before joking that he was “so jealous” the actor would get to experience the film for the very first time.
“Are you f****** kidding me? I’m so jealous you get to see that for the first time. I wonder if it’ll feel as groundbreaking to you as so much has been subsequently based on it.”

Holland, meanwhile, admitted to the Complex’s GOAT Talk that he had no particular reason for skipping the classic, insisting it was simply one of those movies he had never gotten around to watching despite knowing he would probably love it. Released in 1999, the Wachowskis’ groundbreaking sci-fi classic follows Neo, a computer hacker who discovers that reality is nothing more than a vast simulation controlled by intelligent machines, before joining a rebellion to free humanity. For those looking to revisit or experience it for the very first time, like Holland, the iconic blockbuster is currently available to stream on Max.
Ironically, the playful exchange arrives as both actors prepare to headline two of 2026’s biggest cinematic spectacles.
From Ithaca to New York, Tom Holland’s blockbuster summer is only getting started
Matt Damon and Tom Holland are set to share the screen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, where Damon leads the mythological epic as Odysseus, the battle-worn King of Ithaca, while Holland portrays his devoted son, Telemachus. The star-studded ensemble also features Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Travis Scott, making it one of the year’s biggest theatrical events.

However, Holland’s blockbuster streak does not end there. Just weeks after The Odyssey reaches theatres, the actor returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, reprising Peter Parker for his fourth solo outing. Fittingly, during the same GOAT Talk conversation, Damon admitted Spider-Man was the superhero he always wished he could have played growing up, while Holland returned the admiration by naming Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man as his own all-time favorite superhero performance.

"For me, it would have to be Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. I was just going to say that cuz he's funny and he's he looks like a guy you could hang out with." Holland told to Complex.
However, if Damon’s priceless reaction is any indication, audiences may be in for just as much chemistry between Odysseus and Telemachus as they have already witnessed beyond the cameras.
