Even though Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers hung up the shield after Avengers: Endgame and handed the Captain America torch to Sam Wilson, the character still sits among the MCU’s most powerful heroes. Alternate realities and variants on familiar characters have been introduced in the Multiverse Saga, and speculation about Evans’ return has only increased. With Avengers: Doomsday bringing together heroes from all over the Marvel universe, fans are still wondering if Rogers might pull off an unlikely return.

While Marvel has yet to address the speculation, moments from the recently released teaser have fueled a growing fan theory.

The Marvel fandom has been set alight by a new theory about Avengers: Doomsday, with the latest trailers seeming to hint at a major mystery regarding Steve Rogers. Eagle-eyed viewers think the footage could be hinting at something else, sparking speculation about the former Captain America’s role in the upcoming film. The theory has spread like wildfire online, but Marvel Studios has neither confirmed nor commented on the increasing fan speculation.

In the new trailer, Thor is met by Steve Rogers. Rogers has shoulder-length hair, a beard and a black jacket over a dark outfit that reminds the ans of his Avengers: Endgame look. Opposite him, Thor stands in his trademark black armor and flowing red cape with outstretched hands. The God the thunder then throws his Mjolnir at Rogers, speculatively to see if the man in front of him is actually his old friend or just Mystique in disguise. Rogers easily catches the hammer, suggesting he is still worthy.

On the other hand, Disney promoted Avengers: Doomsday with four teaser previews that it attached to screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash in late 2025 and early 2026. The first allegedly suggested at Evans’ return as Steve Rogers aka Captain America, who now has a child, the second showed Thor and his adopted daughter Love, and the third gave the first look of Prof. X, Magneto and Cyclops. The fourth was Black Panther, Namor and M’Baku meeting the Thing in Wakanda. However, Evans' return is still a speculation, and Marvel has not confirmed anything yet.

Regardless of whether the theory proves true, the upcoming film is already shaping up to feature one of the largest ensembles in Marvel Studios history.
