The streets were lined with milkshakes, pep rallies, and comic book optimism. Now, those same streets are preparing to echo with something far more terrifying than high school gossip.

The next chapter is not another romance. It is the day Riverdale learns what survival really means.

Disney+ has officially ordered Afterlife With Archie, with the live-action horror drama set to premiere in October 2027. The series adapts Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla's acclaimed 2013 comic that shocked longtime readers by dragging Archie Comics into a zombie apocalypse. Aguirre-Sacasa, whose reinvention of the Archie universe through Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina proved the characters could thrive beyond their wholesome roots, is developing the series alongside Warner Bros. Television and Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions. 

The project arrives after receiving a rare script-to-series commitment and is expected to debut as an hour-long horror drama during the Halloween season. Afterlife With Archie has long been regarded as one of modern comics' most celebrated horror reinterpretations because it never treats its zombie outbreak as spectacle alone. Instead, it dismantles decades of comforting nostalgia, asking what happens when characters readers grew up trusting are forced into impossible moral choices.

Every apocalypse needs a spark, and this one begins with a loyal dog.

The horror begins with one heartbreaking decision. After Jughead's beloved dog, Hot Dog, dies in an accident, Sabrina the Teenage Witch attempts forbidden magic to bring him back. The resurrection succeeds only in the darkest sense. Hot Dog returns as a zombie and infects Jughead, unleashing a chain reaction that transforms Riverdale into a nightmare where classmates, teachers, parents, and lifelong friends become monsters overnight. 

The brilliance of the comic lies in how quickly familiar comforts disappear, leaving Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the remaining survivors to confront choices that would have been unimaginable just pages earlier. Casting has yet to be announced, but expectations are already high given the creative pedigree behind the adaptation. Aguirre-Sacasa serves as executive producer alongside Jimmy Gibbons, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Jon Goldwater also producing.

The original comic famously ran for ten issues before going on hiatus, ending on a cliffhanger that fans have debated for years. That unfinished ending gives the Disney+ series an unusual opportunity to expand the mythology while preserving the emotional weight that made the source material such a landmark in horror comics.
