Mark Ruffalo has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most outspoken activists, rarely keeping his celebrity separate from causes he believes deserve attention. Although that criticism has now brought an antisemitism accusation from Paramount, Ruffalo has made clear that this charge crosses a line he cannot tolerate.

Mark Ruffalo did not exactly tiptoe around Paramount’s accusation. The actor pushed back forcefully, making clear that his resistance to the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger is rooted in fears about Hollywood becoming smaller, more concentrated, and considerably less welcoming to the people who actually make its films and television shows.

“The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest,” he began in a post put up on X, before returning the conversation to the substance of his objections. He sees the merger as much bigger than a boardroom transaction, particularly when thousands of workers could lose opportunities, and an already crowded industry could become even more tightly controlled.

Rather than retreat from his position, Mark Ruffalo doubled down on his belief that the proposed deal could leave thousands of workers facing fewer opportunities while giving enormous influence to a single corporate structure. The actor has also warned that reduced competition could ultimately affect audiences through fewer choices, higher costs, and a less diverse creative landscape.

Mark Ruffalo is hardly carrying Hollywood’s merger anxiety by himself. More than 1,000 film and television professionals have opposed the Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery deal, including Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson, Javier Bardem, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, J.J. Abrams, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Their concerns stretch across jobs, competition, and creative opportunities.

The resistance extends beyond famous names, with the Writers Guild of America and a group of 12 state attorneys general also challenging the transaction. For the guild, the stakes include wages, residuals, and the number of projects reaching production, while regulators have raised broader antitrust concerns. Ruffalo, therefore, has plenty of company in questioning where this consolidation could lead.
