After shocking the horror world with Obsession, writer-director Curry Barker is already preparing his next trip into darkness with Anything But Ghosts. Obsession, which earned an impressive $95.8 million worldwide against a production budget of just $1 million. Blending supernatural terror with a dark modern cautionary tale, in Obsession, Barker seems not done exploring that world just yet.
And with what Barker has to say about Anything But Ghosts, fans may want to brace themselves for an entirely new wave of supernatural chaos.

The connection between the two films goes deeper than fans may have expected. During a recent post-screening Q&A, Curry Barker revealed that Anything But Ghosts contains a direct reference to Obsession through a news report discussing a woman responsible for a triple homicide, a clear nod to Nikki’s bloody fate in the first film. Although the spell controlling her was ultimately broken, the devastation she left behind appears set to echo into Barker’s next chapter, quietly tying both stories together.
“There’s like a news article thing on the next movie where you hear a news anchor talking about a triple h*******[by] a woman,” Barker told in post-screening Q&A.
But Anything But Ghosts is far from a traditional sequel. The upcoming horror thriller follows two con artists who make a living pretending to be ghost hunters before finding themselves trapped in a genuinely supernatural nightmare. Co-written by Barker and Cooper Tomlinson, the film also features Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw, while Barker and Tomlinson are set to appear alongside the star-studded cast. With fake ghost hunters facing a very real evil, the filmmaker seems ready to trade obsession for an entirely different kind of terror.
But Barker’s next horror movie is not the only thing grabbing attention. The filmmaker’s meteoric rise has become almost as unbelievable as the stories he puts on screen.
Obsession became one of horror’s biggest success stories
Made for under $1 million, Obsession has pulled off one of horror’s most stunning box office runs in recent memory, earning nearly $96 million worldwide. The supernatural thriller even saw its second-weekend earnings jump by 30%, a virtually unheard-of feat for a wide-release horror film. The story follows Bear, a lonely man whose wish for his longtime crush Nikki’s love backfires in horrifying fashion, unleashing a nightmare disguised as romance. The success has completely changed Barker’s Hollywood trajectory.

Before Obsession, the filmmaker built a cult following on YouTube alongside Cooper Tomlinson, where the duo created the viral horror project Milk & Serial on a shoestring budget. After premiering at TIFF's Midnight Madness section, Obsession quickly became a festival sensation before Focus Features acquired it and launched it into theaters. Now, with Hollywood racing to invest in the 26-year-old filmmaker, Barker has already landed a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot for A24 while continuing to build what could become his own interconnected horror universe.
And with Anything But Ghosts now officially tied to the world of Obsession, Curry Barker’s growing horror universe has just gained one more eerie chapter for fans to keep an eye on.
