Actors lending their expressive voices to animated characters not only brings them to life with unique flavor and flair, but they also face unexpected challenges that test their limits. The entire production depends solely on vocal performances with no costumes or stunt doubles for respite. Recently, Anya Taylor-Joy has shed some light on how difficult it can be by sharing her own experience.

Having no prior cautionary information, Taylor-Joy, who voices Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, entered the booth with confidence to find herself struggling.

Anya Taylor-Joy recently revealed that her very first voice acting session was so strenuous that it actually made her puke. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress explained that she went into the role without being aware of the toll it could take on her body. She said she had performed for eight hours straight behind the microphone, which caused her to throw up.

"I went in quite blind and I did it for eight straight hours. So eight straight hours for screaming and efforts and this and that and whatever. And I drank so much water that I puked," the actress told the outlet.

Actors must create multiple action sounds, which include grunts, gasps, screams, and fight noises, to perform their scenes. The process requires extended time because actors must use their vocal abilities to create an entire action scene. During the same interview, Jack Black chimed in, supporting the actress, adding how he would be dependent on honey and tea to calm his throat, as voice acting indeed takes a toll on vocal cords and pipes.

Taylor-Joy had initially disclosed her struggles with voice acting, appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers. According to her, continuous yelling and screaming with powerful vocalization could be as draining as physical acting, which she realized much later. In separate interviews, she had revealed that recording sessions extended beyond three hours, and her voice completely stopped working during a six-hour recording session.

While several viewers may have confused her first acting role as Princess Peach, the actress set the record straight by clarifying that she had not faced any such difficulties with the Super Mario character. And the wait to hear Taylor-Joy give her best to yelling is over.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film stars a stellar voice cast of A-listers, which includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, and Brie Larson. Early reviews of the film, though, appear mixed; it is rich in video-game Easter eggs and nostalgia, which might be appealing to Mario fans. And not to forget Taylor-Joy's efforts that went into making Princess Peach's high pitch realistic.
