The theatrical roadmap for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is famously plotted out years in advance, balancing grueling production schedules with monumental ensemble crossovers. But as the franchise builds toward its massive multiversal climax, locking down the sprawling call sheets for its most ambitious projects requires navigating unique scheduling conflicts. For Anthony Mackie, one of the MCU's leading figures, the road to the ultimate cinematic showdown in Avengers: Secret Wars involves a detour to the stage first, meaning fans will have to wait just a bit longer to see how the epic saga finally takes shape.

However, Mackie did put a timeline on his return to sets for the final Avengers movie for Phase 6.

Anthony Mackie confirms Avengers: Secret Wars filming timeline

Marvel star Anthony Mackie has added fuel to the fire surrounding the production timeline for Avengers: Secret Wars, a blockbuster currently slated for both its shoot and premiere next year. Mackie recently revealed he is headlining a fresh Broadway staging of Shakespeare’s 'Macbeth,' a theatrical run in New York that will keep him occupied until July 2027. According to Deadline, the star revealed his Avengers: Secret Wars filming schedule to start immediately after his Broadway stint.

"Once I finish on Broadway, I'll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars," Mackie said.

The actor is set to tackle the iconic role of the noble general-turned-tyrant in the spring 2027 staging. This upcoming engagement marks Mackie’s first return to Broadway since 2009, when he shared the stage with Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, and Zoe Kazan in Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy 'A Behanding in Spokane.'

Expressing palpable enthusiasm for the milestone, Mackie shared with Deadline that his foundational roots lie in the theater, noting that performing on stage has remained a deep-seated passion since he was seven years old. Reflecting on the magnitude of the upcoming engagement, the actor remarked on the rarity of reaching such a prestigious echelon within the medium, emphasizing that headlining 'Macbeth' on Broadway is an achievement few actors can claim.

Circling back to his Avengers: Secret Wars update, it has sent a wave of concern through the Marvel fandom regarding the release date of the movie.

A possible delay looms large on Avengers: Secret Wars

Industry observers have been quick to emphasize that Marvel has given no indication that its scheduled December 17, 2027 release date for Avengers: Secret Wars is facing a delay. Even so, moviegoers are increasingly questioning how the studio intends to execute principal photography and complex post-production for such a massive multi-hero epic with barely a year remaining before its theatrical debut. With no current signs that production will kick off before the end of the year, the logistical hurdles are piling up.

Much of the ensemble cast will soon be tied down by a heavy promotional tour for Avengers: Doomsday starting in late November, leaving Anthony Mackie with only a narrow window before he reports for theatrical rehearsals. On the bright side, pushing major photography to 2027 could give Marvel a distinct strategic advantage, allowing the studio to gauge audience reactions to Doomsday following its December 18 premiere and pivot accordingly.
