Every new reveal about Avengers: Doomsday seems to make things considerably worse for Earth's mightiest heroes, and Doctor Doom is not exactly making their lives easier. From Steve Rogers’ time-hopping retirement and the Avengers undoing Thanos’ snap to Thor resurrecting Love, the heroes’ greatest victories could become their biggest liabilities. With three universes hurtling toward an Incursion and Loki potentially among Doom’s earliest victims, the odds are looking particularly grim.

Sam Wilson, meanwhile, barely gets comfortable in the Captain America costume before another apocalypse comes knocking, with Anthony Mackie placing Doomsday just months after his debut.

Apparently, becoming Captain America comes with absolutely no probation period. Speaking to SYFY Wire over Zoom while promoting Andy Weir-produced Exoplanet, Anthony Mackie revealed that the next Avengers adventure takes place just a few months after Captain America: Brave New World. Considering the chaos Sam has only just survived, that is hardly a comforting timeline.

"You find him literally months after Brave New World coming into this new expedition and getting the Avengers back together, getting the crew back together," he said.

To be fair, Sam Wilson has already earned himself a vacation. His first adventure as the Star-Spangled Avenger involved presidential conspiracies, international tensions, and an assassination attempt that left his friend Isaiah Bradley fighting to clear his name. Throw Samuel Sterns, better known as the Leader, into the equation, and suddenly being the world's newest superhero looks suspiciously like a full-time diplomatic and espionage nightmare.

Then came the beatdowns, the adamantium crisis, and a rather unfortunate encounter with President Thaddeus Ross in his Red Hulk form. Sam also had to contend with Joaquin Torres being shot out of the sky, making his first outing an especially punishing introduction to the shield.  Yet, as Mackie explained to SYFY Wire, his next responsibility is already assembling Earth's mightiest heroes for an even bigger fight.

   The revelation also opens a rather interesting can of worms, especially considering Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes still have some unfinished business.

The compressed timeline also raises an interesting question about whether Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes have actually managed to let bygones be bygones. Their relationship has hardly been on the smoothest trajectory, with Sam stepping into the Captain America role while Bucky finds himself running with the Thunderbolts. Unlike the gap after Captain America: Civil War, there is little room for years of silence or off-screen reconciliation before their paths collide again.

That makes their reunion particularly interesting, especially after Anthony Mackie revealed that he and his co-stars had quite the "powwow" behind the scenes. The dynamic could bring back shades of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers after their Civil War fallout: two heroes expected to work together despite everything between them. Whether Sam and Bucky can put their differences aside before Doctor Doom arrives remains one of the more intriguing questions raised by the film's unusually tight timeline.
