Marvel does not hand out wings and shields to just anyone, but Anthony Mackie somehow made both look effortless. From his scene-stealing debut as Sam Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe's official Captain America, Mackie has grown into one of the franchise's most recognizable faces. Yet when he first dreamed of joining Marvel, his sights were set on Black Panther instead.

Missing Black Panther still left Anthony Mackie with two superhero legacies, which is hardly a consolation prize, yet, apparently, even future Captain Americas collect 'the one that got away.'

The Marvel Hero Anthony Mackie really wanted to play

Anthony Mackie was not casually browsing Marvel roles when he first entered the studio orbit. He was actively pushing for one very specific character, going as far as writing letters to Marvel and repeatedly expressing his desire to bring Black Panther to life. In an interview with Inverse, Mackie revealed that his fascination with the character was long-standing and deeply personal, shaped by years of admiration for the Wakandan hero.

"And I wanted to be Black Panther because growing up I [expletive] loved Black Panther," he said.

Marvel, of course, prefers its secrets locked tighter than vibranium vaults. During a meeting with producer Nate Moore and directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, Mackie believed he was being gently guided toward Wakanda’s royal lineage. Instead, he was offered something far less regal and considerably more aerodynamic.

When the truth arrived, it was not the vibranium throne. It was Sam Wilson. Mackie admitted to Inverse that he was confused, even questioning what other major comic figure could carry such weight, before realizing he was stepping into the Falcon. Quite a Marvel pivot, ultimately giving the world both Falcon and Chadwick Boseman’s iconic Black Panther.

Yes, Anthony Mackie wanted Black Panther, but Falcon turned out to be a role he could not have worn better, unlike what he thinks of Henry Cavill's Man of Steel.

Why Anthony Mackie was a great fit for Falcon

Anthony Mackie arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as an audition hopeful, but as a finished argument for why casting sometimes prefers certainty over search parties. Marvel Studios placed him opposite towering figures like Chris Evans in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, trusting his effortless charisma to hold its own without rehearsal theatrics. The result was a Falcon who felt less introduced and more discovered.

Juilliard-trained discipline gave Anthony Mackie the kind of precision that makes fictional flight look suspiciously logical. Years of classical acting, coupled with physical performance training rooted in mime-like control, allowed him to treat mechanical wings as extensions of intent rather than props. Even in ensemble chaos, Falcon never drifted; he simply redirected gravity with confidence and timing.

What ultimately defined Anthony Mackie as Falcon was not enhancement but being grounded, a rare superhero quality in a universe fond of spectacle inflation. Sam Wilson’s humanity, military background, and emotional intelligence became the real center of gravity in stories like Avengers: Infinity War, proving that leadership does not require serum so much as sincerity, and he ultimately made Falcon feel undeniably essential to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
