Anne Hathaway Reveals How Jack Antonoff Helped Her Find the Sound of ‘Mother Mary’
There is little that Anne Hathaway cannot do. From showing her versatility as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises to flaunting her vocal prowess in Les Misérables, she is an actress of many talents. And yet her recent film, Mother Mary, in which she plays a pop singer, posed a huge challenge for her in creating the songs.
She recalled how Jack Antonoff helped by guiding her for the final recording. Looking back on those days, she reflected on the effort required for the role and how it differed from her previous work.

During a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Anne Hathaway explained that, despite having vocal training throughout her career, playing a pop singer in Mother Mary was challenging. She compared her existing skills to riding a ten-speed bike, while the demands of the role were more like handling a Harley, something that she had to learn. However, she credited Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff for guiding her through the process.
“He just kept giving me notes. We would go in and record, and then I would get to go meditate on what it was that Jack was talking about, slowly inch by inch, year by year,” she said.
That explains why Anne Hathaway described her work in Mother Mary as transformative. Speaking to Vogue about her role in the film, Hathaway explained that she had to let go of her ego, become a complete beginner, accept her mistakes, and start learning again. Meanwhile, the film itself was not easy to pull off.
But much like how Jack Antonoff guided Hathaway, the film’s crew also had an interesting blueprint to follow.
David Lowery drew inspiration from Taylor Swift for the movie
In an interview with Empire, David Lowery explained that the team drew inspiration from Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga for Mother Mary. Swift’s concerts, particularly her Reputation Tour, served as a blueprint for the project. He revealed that the team closely studied the 'Reputation' concert film to design their own concert sequences.
“I would often would be like, ‘Imagine Taylor Swift in ten or 15 years — that’s sort of who this character could be,’” Lowery said.

Lowery and Anne Hathaway even attended The Eras Tour in Europe to soak as much of the live concert experience as possible for Mother Mary. With such strong and brilliant inspiration, along with intense training and long hours of rehearsals, there is little doubt that the team has poured immense effort and their heart into the film. From Hathaway’s performance to the powerful songs, Mother Mary is promising to be deeply moving and a magnificent cinematic experience.
