The trailer for Verity has arrived, adding another Colleen Hoover bestseller to Hollywood’s increasingly crowded adaptation shelf. Anne Hathaway has gone from Christopher Nolan’s Homeric epic The Odyssey to a film adaptation of Hoover’s twisted 2018 novel, while Dakota Johnson steps into another psychologically bruised, complicated character. And if Hoover adaptations have taught Hollywood anything, it is that the real marketing campaign begins when the book readers start arguing online.
The trailer wastes little time establishing the Crawford estate as the kind of beautiful house where every hallway feels like it has overheard something it should not have. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to finish the book series of celebrated author Verity Crawford after an accident leaves Verity bedridden.
Anne Hathaway plays Verity with an unsettling stillness, while Josh Hartnett plays her husband Jeremy, placing three actors with very different screen personas inside a story built around manipulation, attraction, and buried family secrets.

Michael Showalter directs the adaptation, with Nick Antosca writing the screenplay alongside Hoover, and Amazon MGM Studios has set the theatrical release for October 2, 2026. The trailer leans hard into the novel’s psychological-thriller machinery: snowy isolation, intimate encounters, ominous warnings, and Lowen discovering a manuscript that appears to expose the darkest corners of Verity’s life. The important Hoover ingredient remains intact: nobody in this house seems entirely trustworthy, and the line between confession and fiction keeps getting blurrier.
That combination has already sent fans into the familiar adaptation ritual: casting approval, book loyalty, trailer-frame analysis, and the inevitable question of whether Hollywood can actually capture what made Verity such a conversation starter.
Fans are already calling the casting perfect in Verity
Fans have already begun praising the casting for Verity, with the lineup feeling remarkably close to how many readers imagined the characters while reading Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller. The early reaction suggests the cast could be one of the adaptation’s biggest strengths, especially as audiences prepare to see these characters brought to life.
The hype was seen on DiscussingFilm's post of the film, where one fan, @FOSTER7864 is already looking at the film as a potential box-office player, writing:
"Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in a physiological thriller directed at Colleen Hoover’s book fanbase is going to absolutely dominate the box office this October. The casting for this is insanely perfect. Who’s ready for the plot twists?"
The excitement makes sense because Verity is not simply another romance adaptation. It sits much closer to the seductive, dangerous territory that made Hoover’s darker storytelling particularly divisive, while Hathaway and Johnson bring enough star power to turn the adaptation into an event.
@CutXaction summed up the trailer’s appeal more ominously:
"Some books are better left unread… 👀 This one looks like a psychological nightmare in the best way. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett? Say less."
The comment captures the movie’s selling point perfectly. The cast itself becomes part of the mystery, particularly with Hathaway leaning into a role far removed from the polished Anne of The Devil Wears Prada or the theatrical energy of Les Misérables.

Meanwhile, @LyfAcrosBorders echoed that reaction:
"This one already feels like it’s going to be a psychological nightmare in the best way. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett in the same movie? Yeah, I’m watching this."
@agbevem took a different route, observing, "Anne Hathaway is almost every movie this year. She’s very good though. When you good, you good. Cheers to her."
There is a genuine career-season quality to that reaction. Hathaway has been moving between prestige spectacle and contemporary material, making Verity another sharply different stop on an unusually busy 2026 slate.

And then there is Josh Hartnett. @Shpen221 celebrated the actor’s recent resurgence, saying, "I’m so happy Josh Hartnett is getting in all these roles recently, he is a great actor." After Oppenheimer and more recent genre work, Hartnett has become one of those actors whose appearance can instantly trigger a "good to see him again" response.
Verity therefore arrives with something more valuable than a recognizable book title. It has a cast capable of selling the paranoia, a director coming from an interesting tonal background, and a Hoover fanbase already dissecting every frame.
