Scattering screams, satire, and outrageous chaos across cinema screens since 2000, Scary Movie has cemented itself as one of pop culture's most iconic parody franchises. At the heart of that madness stood Anna Faris' hilariously clueless yet endlessly lovable Cindy Campbell, a career-defining role the actress recently credited to the Wayans brothers. And with Scary Movie 6 set to storm theatres on June 5, the franchise's signature blend of horror, absurdity, and laugh-out-loud mayhem is gearing up for another unforgettable chapter.

So how did a first-time actress land one of comedy's most iconic roles, and why does Anna Faris still credit the Wayans brothers for transforming her career more than two decades later?

During a recent Entertainment Tonight "Spilling the ETea" segment alongside Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris revisited the audition that changed her life. Marlon revealed that Keenen Ivory Wayans personally chose Faris for Cindy Campbell after watching her audition tape, even though Melissa Joan Hart had been considered for the role. The revelation left Faris laughing in disbelief, but it also reminded her how unexpected the opportunity felt at the time. In fact, the actress admitted that after landing the role, she was convinced she would eventually be fired.

“When I was cast in Scary Movie, I was convinced I was going to get fired. I called my college roommate. She said, ‘Oh Anna, you are not funny.’ And I was like, ‘I know, I know, I know,’” Faris told Entertainment Tonight.

Released in 2000, Scary Movie became a cultural phenomenon, earning an astonishing $278 million worldwide against a modest $19 million budget. The horror parody not only out-grossed its inspiration, Scream, but also became the highest-grossing film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans at the time. Following a group of clueless teenagers stalked by a bumbling Ghostface-inspired killer after a deadly hit-and-run cover-up, the film launched Faris into stardom and turned Cindy Campbell into a comedy icon.

But just when fans thought Cindy Campbell's story had ended for good, the franchise's most iconic final girl is making one last chaotic return.

Anna Faris returns as Cindy Campbell in Scary Movie 6

For an entire generation of moviegoers, Anna Faris and Cindy Campbell are practically inseparable. Whether she was spoofing Scream, The Ring, Signs, or The Grudge, Cindy's fearless absurdity and unmatched chemistry with Regina Hall helped make her one of comedy's most beloved final girls. That is why her absence from Scary Movie 5 left many fans wondering whether the franchise had lost its most important ingredient. Faris is officially back for Scary Movie 6, arriving in theatres on June 5.

Reuniting with Regina Hall and the Wayans brothers, the revival aims to modern horror juggernauts, including The Substance, M3GAN, Smile, Longlegs, Terrifier, Stranger Things, and the latest Scream films. This time, an older Cindy turns to a bizarre anti-ageing treatment that predictably unleashes a fresh wave of madness. For Faris, however, the return means far more than another sequel. After losing her Malibu home in the devastating wildfires and openly discussing feeling overlooked by Hollywood, a surprise call from Marlon Wayans reportedly felt less like a casting offer and more like the perfect comeback story.

And now, more than 25 years after a nervous newcomer first stepped into Cindy Campbell's shoes, Faris is returning to the franchise that turned her into a comedy icon.
