In a conversation with Variety about the long-awaited animated adaptation, Serkis shared that the project started as a motion-capture film, but the creative direction was later changed into animation. Actor-filmmaker Andy Serkis has been one of the biggest names associated with motion-capture filmmaking for decades. This made his recent decision about his film, Animal Farm, all the more surprising.

Serkis also explained that the shift was not just about visuals, but also about making George Orwell’s story more accessible to younger audiences.

Animal Farm by George Orwell, intended as a kid-friendly critique of Soviet society under Joseph Stalin, tells the story of barn animals revolting against their human overlords to create an equal society, only to fall back into a different kind of tyranny. Now director Andy Serkis devised an all-new computer-animated version that makes Orwell's masterpiece appear to be a relic of the Cold War.

Serkis’ long-brewing passion project, Animal Farm, is in theaters as of May 1, 2026. The adaptation has been in development for over a decade. It has gone from a live-action, performance-capture style to a softer, animated look for its target audience, especially young, curious minds. The director aims to introduce Orwell’s classic satire to a new generation.

He recently spoke about the challenges he and the creative team had to overcome. He talked about what is most relevant today and why it is so important to include a hopeful tomorrow.

“A long time in the making, we set out to make it as a motion capture movie and then decided that if we'd made a live action version, it would have been much darker,” the Lord of the Rings actor said in an interview with Variety,

"And I'm really glad that we decided to make it as an animation and ultimately to make it for young, inquiring minds who could sit with their parents and grandparents and have a very seminal political piece of work brought to them,” he added.

While the animation style may have changed, the story remains rooted in Orwell’s dark political allegory.

What is Animal Farm about?

Animal Farm is a satirical, allegorical novella by George Orwell in which farm animals revolt against their human farmer, creating a society based on equality. However, the pigs, led by Napoleon, take over the power. They become oppressive and human-like masters, thus betraying the revolution.

It premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 9, 2025. It had its world premiere on 11 October 2025 in the United Kingdom. In December 2025, Angel Studios acquired U.S. theatrical distribution rights to the film and released it on 1 May 2026.

Directed by Andy Serkis, the film is an animated satire about farm animals. Now, Serkis’s comments offered fans a rare peek into how much Animal Farm altered during its lengthy development. The change in creative direction is a part of Serkis’ wider mission to bring a new generation to Orwell’s timeless warning about power, corruption, and the fragility of equality.
