Andy Serkis’ Picks Christopher Nolan’s Underrated Gem Starring Hugh Jackman as His Favorite

Andy Serkis has a favorite Christopher Nolan film, and it stars not just Hugh Jackman but Serkis himself. The actor, known for transformative performances both on screen and behind a motion-capture suit, recently opened up about the Nolan project that holds a genuinely special place in his heart. The film boasts a roster stacked with Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, and David Bowie alongside Jackman and Serkis, a dazzling period story that simply did not land with audiences the way Nolan's other films did.

But while audiences moved on, one cast member never quite managed to escape its magic.

Andy Serkis has named The Prestige, Christopher Nolan's 2006 magician thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, as one of his all-time favorite films. The period drama follows two rival illusionists dismantling their own lives in pursuit of the perfect trick. Serkis appears as Mr. Alley, Nikola Tesla's sharp assistant, opposite Jackman's obsessive Robert Angier.

"I actually really love watching that film. There are very few films that I'm kind of comfortable watching that I'm in," Serkis said to Variety.

He then added, "I do think it is one of my favorite films actually," a sentence that somehow makes an already remarkable film sound even more extraordinary.

Serkis and Jackman shared considerable screen time in The Prestige, with Serkis as Tesla's gatekeeper, fielding Jackman's increasingly desperate requests for impossible technology. The film marked Serkis stepping out of motion-capture territory entirely, holding his own alongside Jackman, Bale, and Michael Caine in a fully live-action role. For Nolan, the film sat between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, a quieter, sharper chapter in his journey from intimate filmmaker to blockbuster architect.

Completing what can only be described as the ultimate 2027 double act, Serkis also returns as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman Part II, hitting screens on October 1, 2027, directed by Matt Reeves alongside Robert Pattinson. Production begins in London this June, with Serkis filming his Alfred scenes before the year ends. From a magician's assistant to a butler to a creature born of obsession, Serkis has always known how to pick the most fascinating room to walk into.
