Andrew Garfield is approaching Sam Altman through the moral questions surrounding power, ambition, and the AI race in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial. The role marks another sharp turn for Garfield, whose career has repeatedly moved between intimate character work and major cultural figures. From Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network to Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick...BOOM! and his tenure as Peter Parker, Garfield has often found his strongest performances by looking past surface imitation and into what drives a person.

That method appears to have been especially important with Altman, a living tech figure whose public image is already shaped by interviews, headlines, and internet scrutiny. Now, Garfield explained that playing him meant wrestling with the uncomfortable logic behind enormous technological ambition.

Andrew Garfield looked beyond Sam Altman’s public persona

Andrew Garfield did not approach Sam Altman simply by asking how he speaks, walks, or presents himself in public. Instead, he went toward the harder psychological questions surrounding what it means to control a company operating at the center of the AI race.

“What does it take to not only run one of these companies, but make decisions that are going to hurt people, no matter how you slice it, as long as you are committed to winning the race and being the one to hold the Holy Grail in your hand? What does it take in order to sleep at night?,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

The questions are revealing because Garfield has long shown an appetite for characters whose inner lives carry as much weight as their public actions. With Artificial, he is applying that instinct to a figure whose influence extends far beyond a conventional corporate drama. As per his THR interview, Garfield even had an earlier connection to this kind of role after auditioning for Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, ultimately playing Saverin instead.

But Artificial arrives with its own Hollywood drama attached. The film itself had to navigate a remarkably strange path to the screen, with Amazon MGM Studios stepping away after developing the project.

Artificial had its own battle before reaching theaters

The irony was difficult to miss. A film about OpenAI, corporate power, and the race to control transformative technology suddenly found itself caught in a distribution story involving one of the biggest companies in that same technological ecosystem. Amazon MGM had originally backed the project, but ultimately decided it would be better served elsewhere. Neon stepped in and secured the film, which is now positioned for a theatrical release on Christmas Day after its New York Film Festival premiere.

There was also an unusually meta layer to the project because Sam Altman himself has reacted to Andrew Garfield’s portrayal. Reports surrounding the film have noted Altman recognizing Garfield’s physical mannerisms, including his walk, making the whole exercise even stranger for a performance built around a living subject.

Artificial therefore is not simply another Hollywood biopic about a powerful man. It is a film about power that had to survive the machinery of power before audiences could even see it. Garfield’s questions suggest that the performance is ultimately less interested in copying Altman than examining the psychological bargain behind his ambition.
